Stormy Petrels Strong First Quarter Too Much The Hawks

BROOKHAVEN, Ga.- Huntingdon women's lacrosse(2-4 overall, 2-0 USA South) was taken down by the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels(9-4 overall) following a 10 point opening quarter from Oglethorpe.

How it happened

Oglethorpe came out of the gates on fire, scoring their first three goals within the first two minutes of the game. The Hawks struggled to find an answer defensively, allowing five more goals in the next five minutes, putting them in a 8-0 hole early. The Hawks defense was able to generate some turnovers to stop the bleeding for a brief moment, but two more goals put Huntingdon behind 10-0 entering the second quarter. The second quarter closely mirrored the first, with Oglethorpe scoring four goals early and keeping the Hawks off the scoreboard to hold a 14-0 lead going into halftime. Early in the second half, it appeared that the Hawks found their answer defensively, not allowing any goals through the first four minutes before the Stormy Petrels broke through to take a 15-0 lead. Oglethorpe matched their offensive intensity with a stout defensive effort on the opposite end of the field, forcing 22 Huntingdon turnovers to limit shot attempts for the Hawks. Huntingdon would not put any points on the board until the 14:39 mark in the fourth period, where Peyton Beachler was able to put a shot in. Colby Jones followed Beachler less than two minutes later with a goal of her own with 13:00 minutes remaining, but the Hawks ran out of time to mount what would have been a monumental comeback, taking the 19-2 loss on the road.

Key Notes

  • Oglethorpe managed to secure 28 shot attempts, limiting the Hawks to just 5

  • Of the 24 draw controls, Huntingdon was only able to secure possession on four of them, with the Stormy Petrels controlling the other 20

The Hawks look to get back on track on March 30th, traveling to take on Pfeiffer in a USA South road contest. Gametime is scheduled for 10:00 AM CT.
