Byard and Phillips help lead Lady Hawks to first win of the season

MACON, Ga. – The Huntingdon women's soccer team set the tone on Wednesday to pick up its first win of the season. Josie Byard and Dana Phillips each scored once as the Lady Hawks knocked off Wesleyan College 2-0.

Byard scored in the 73rd minute on an assist from Sam Havel and Phillips added the final goal in the 84th minute.

"We played really well," Huntingdon women's soccer coach Robert Milner said. "It was very positive for us to get our first win of the season. The girls played with a lot of composure and I was very pleased with our performance.

"Obviously, Dana and Josie's goals were big and they played well for us. There were a lot of good performances today. It was a team win. I'm happy for the girls and I want this to be something we move forward from and build on. We have some tough tests ahead, but I believe these girls are up for the challenge."

One of the biggest changes for Huntingdon (1-4, 1-1 Great South Athletic Conference) was its offensive attack. After taking just 11 shots in the first four games, the Lady Hawks took 31 shots on Wednesday, including 18 shots on goal.

Wesleyan took just one shot for the game, which Huntingdon keeper Jenny Burnash recorded a save on.

Phillips finished the game with four shots on goal, Kate Garrigan and Kathleen Penney both took three shots on goal and Mary Kathryn Allen and Havel each took two shots on goal. Byard, Bethany Martin, Carlie Reed and Ashlie Fristoe each had one shot on goal.

The Lady Hawks return to conference play on Saturday at Spelman.
