Thibodeau named USA South Women’s Tennis Player of the Week

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Huntingdon sophomore Britni Thibodeau won two matches at No. 1 singles and was 2-0 at No. 1 doubles last week to earn USA South Women's Tennis Player of the Week.

In singles, Thibodeau opened the week with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Ferrum and closed the week with a 6-2, 6-0 win against Maryville. In doubles, she teamed with Tara-Beth Hall to win 8-2 at Ferrum and 8-6 against Maryville.

Baseball Player of the Week
Will Cleland, Covenant - The junior second baseman from Jacksonville, Florida went a combined 9-for-19 (.474) with three RBI, two runs scored, two doubles and three triples as the Scots posted a 3-1 record last week. In a 10-3 loss at nationally-ranked Birmingham Southern, Cleland was 1-for-5. In a three-game sweep of USA South foe Piedmont, Cleland was a combined 8-for-14 with three RBI, two runs scored, two doubles and three triples. In the second game of the series with Piedmont, an 11-8 win, Cleland set a new school and USA South record with three triples. Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Taylor Davis, Averett - The Clayton, North Carolina junior earned a win in his only appearance on the mound last week, a 7-0 victory over USA South foe LaGrange. Davis pitched the first seven innings and did not allow a run on six hits with zero walks and six strikeouts. Also Nominated: Jake Perkins, Ferrum; Josh Howard, Methodist; Neil Lawler, Huntingdon.

Softball Player of the Week
Olivia Duncan, Piedmont - The sophomore catcher/infielder from Comer, Georgia went a combined 11-for-17 (.647) with five runs scored, five RBI, one double, one triple, one walk and three stolen bases as he Lions posted a 6-0 record last week. In a doubleheader sweep at USA South rival LaGrange, Duncan was a combined 5-for-8 with one run batted in. In two wins over Salem, Duncan was a combined 4-for-5 with four runs scored, two RBI, one double and two stolen bases. Finally, in two wins over Truett-McConnell, Duncan was a combined 2-for-4 with two RBI, one run scored, one walk and one stolen base. Softball Pitcher of the Week
Jordin Ellingson, Piedmont - The Cornelia, Georgia sophomore appeared in four games last week, three of which were starts, and earned a 4-0 record by tossing a total of 21.0 innings, allowing one earned run on 11 hits with six walks and 21 strikeouts. In a doubleheader sweep of USA South foe LaGrange, Ellingson earned a complete-game win in the first game, allowing just one run, then came on in relief in game number two to toss four final shutout innings to collect the victory. Her other two wins last week were five-inning complete-game shutouts. Also Nominated: Aiyana Lew, Ferrum; Amy Hamlett, Averett; Hannah Rogers, Covenant; Katy Messick, Huntingdon.

Lacrosse Player of the Week
Katie Burnet, Meredith - The Apex, North Carolina sophomore midfielder totaled 24 points on 15 goals and nine assists in a 3-1 week for the Avenging Angels. She also added 18 draw controls, 12 groundballs and seven caused turnovers last week. In a 17-9 win over Coker, Burnet scored four goals with three assists, six draw controls, four caused turnovers and three groundballs. In a 15-13 victory over Kean, Burnet totaled four goals, one assist and four draw controls. In a 15-11 loss to USA South foe Piedmont, Burnet tallied five goals, two assists, six draw controls, five groundballs and three caused turnovers. Finally, in a 16-0 win over USA South rival Agnes Scott, Burnet scored two goals, dished out three assists, grabbed four groundballs and collected two draw controls. Also Nominated: Cassie Walter, Methodist; Courtney Hamm, Ferrum; Jen Price, Huntingdon; Kristin Norris, Greensboro; Mckynsey Douglas, Piedmont; Tikeyah Shaw, N.C. Wesleyan.

Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Kaleigh Hemstock, Greensboro - The North Haven, Connecticut sophomore goalkeeper posted a 5.07 goals against average while playing 142 minutes in goal and stopping 12 shots in a 3-0 week for The Pride. In a 22-2 win over USA South foe LaGrange, Hemstock played the first 39 minutes and allowed two goals with three saves. In a 12-6 win over Wesley, Hemstock played the first 51 minutes and allowed four goals with four saves. Finally, in a 15-6 victory over Randolph, Hemstock played the first 52 minutes and allowed six goals with five saves. Men's Tennis Player of the Week
Peter Hviid, N.C. Wesleyan - The junior from Gentofte, Denmark earned a 2-0 record at both the number-two singles and number-one doubles positions last week versus USA South opponents Methodist and Ferrum. His singles victory versus regionally-ranked Methodist earned the overall match win for the team. In doubles, Hviid teamed with Mikhail Konnov to collect the wins. Also Nominated: Teal Howard, Methodist; Mason Riza, Piedmont; Roy Anderson, Covenant; Zac Baldwin, Huntingdon.

Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Britni Thibodeau, Huntingdon - The sophomore from Pace, Florida earned a 2-0 record at both the number-one singles and doubles spots last week for the Huntingdon. Thibodeau earned her singles victories over opponents from USA South foes Ferrum and Maryville. In doubles, Thibodeau collected the two victories with help from teammate Tara-Beth Hall. Also Nominated: Sarah Carter, Covenant; Caroline Hunt, Meredith.

Baseball Rookie of the Week
Hunter Ashworth, Averett - The freshman second baseman from Danville, Virginia went a combined 6-for-14 (.429) with seven runs scored, one run batted in, four walks and two stolen bases. In a 19-5 win over Virginia Wesleyan, Ashworth was 3-for-5 with four runs scored, one run batted in, one walk and one stolen base. In a three game series versus USA South LaGrange, Averett captured one of the three contests while Ashworth was a combined 3-for-9 with three runs scored, three walks and one stolen base. Also Nominated: Forrest Hunter, Covenant; Lucas Scott, Methodist; Ty Comer, Ferrum.

Baseball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
Daniel Garrett, LaGrange - The Covington, Georgia freshman appeared in three games last week, all in relief, and earned a 1-0 record by tossing a total of six shutout innings while allowing just one hit with two walks and one strikeout. In a 3-2 win over USA South foe Averett, Garrett came into the game during the fifth inning and tossed 2.1 shutout innings to collect the victory. Also Nominated: Cody Johnson, Averett.

Softball Rookie of the Week
Allison Vaughn, Piedmont - The freshman infielder from Ringgold, Georgia went a combined 9-for-18 (.500) with six runs scored, three RBI, one double, one home run and two walks as the Lions posted a 6-0 record last week. In a doubleheader sweep at USA South rival LaGrange, Vaughn was a combined 3-for-6 with two runs scored, two RBI, one home run and two walks. In two wins over Salem, Vaughn was a combined 3-for-6 with two runs scored, one run batted in and one double. Finally, in two wins over Truett-McConnell, Vaughn was a combined 3-for-6 with two runs scored. Also Nominated: Amanda Roberts, Ferrum; Jessica Long, Averett.

Softball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
Amanda Roberts, Ferrum - The Lawrenceville, Georgia freshman appeared in three games last week versus USA South competition, all starts, and earned a 2-0 record by tossing a total of 15.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on 12 hits with three walks and nine strikeouts. In a 7-5 win over Huntingdon, Roberts tossed the first 5.1 innings, allowing four runs, only two of which were earned, on five hits with one strikeout to earn a no-decision. In an 8-0, five-inning, win over Mary Baldwin, Roberts went the distance without allowing a run. Finally, in an 8-0, six-inning, win over N.C. Wesleyan, Roberts again tossed a complete-game shutout.

Lacrosse Rookie of the Week
Kayla Jones, Piedmont - The Lawrenceville, Georgia freshman attacker tallied six 11 on six goals and five assists with two draw controls, one groundball and one caused turnover as the Lions earned a 2-0 record last week versus USA South competition. In a 15-11 win over Meredith, Jones totaled three goals, three assists and one groundball. In a 22-5 victory over N.C. Wesleyan, Jones scored three goals, dished out two assists, collected two draw controls and caused one turnover. Also Nominated: Kelsey Cenate, Greensboro; Molly Lewis, N.C. Wesleyan; Raven Winters, Meredith; Sam Baker, Huntingdon.

Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week
Elias Kerem, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman from Stockholm, Sweden earned a 2-0 record at both the number-four singles and number-two doubles positions last week versus USA South opponents Ferrum and regionally-ranked Methodist. In doubles, Kerem teamed with Eduardo Ugalde to earn the victories. Also Nominated: John Dangerfield, Methodist; Robbie Werner, Piedmont; Sabastian Riveros Florez, Huntingdon.

Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week
Natalia Lopez, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman from Maracaibo, Venezuela earned a 2-0 record at both the number-one singles and doubles spots last week for the Bishops. Lopez earned singles wins over opponents from USA South foes Ferrum and regionally-ranked Methodist. In doubles action, Lopez and teammate Katie Beeman earned the two wins. Also Nominated: Cailin Goff, Meredith; Daniela Lozano, Huntingdon; Ellen Kirkpatrick, Covenant; Sam Munze, Methodist.
