Volleyball working hard during preseason

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon volleyball team opened preseason camp on Aug. 18 and second-year head coach Latonia Brady has been pleased with her team's effort.

"Preseason is going really well," Brady said. "We were nervous about our schedule because we only had four days of practice before classes started, and I have never experienced that before. But I am very happy with the way it's going."

The Hawks bring in 14 newcomers and welcome back 11 players from last season.

"Our core returners came back better than what I was expecting and that is awesome," Brady said. "They knew there would be some freshmen ready to battle for their spots. The only concern we have right now is the chemistry between our hitters and setters, but that will get better over time.

"Our upperclassmen leadership has been amazing so far. The girls I have returning have really bought into the process and want to win. They have had two spring seasons and one fall season with assistant coach Mary Willis and myself, so they know what it takes."

With so many young players on the team, Brady expects the freshmen to step up immediately.

"I think we will be one of those teams to hit our peak in October because of our youth," Brady said. "Having young setters to the run the offense we want will take some time. Mentally we won't be there to start with, but the heart of our conference schedule isn't until October. We will have freshmen start for us and that has also pushed the returners to work harder."

The Hawks open their season on Sept. 2 at Sewanee. Brady has not announced the date for her team's red-grey scrimmage and said her team is still working on more technical sessions before moving to 6-on-6 play.
