Hawks Earn Two Key Wins on Senior Day

MONTGOMERY, Ala.- Huntingdon Volleyball (12-16 overall, 11-5 CCS) defeated two conference opponents, the Berea Mountaineers and the Piedmont Lions, in a home tri-match by scores of 3-2 and 3-1.

Today the Hawks recognized their lone senior, Kennedy Chambers for being a four-year player and for all of her accomplishments on and off the court.

 

Match One Against Berea:

The Hawks flew out of the gates to begin the first set, earning a commanding 10-2 lead with kills from Izzy Valldeperas, Eva Ellenburg, and Ashlen Janowski. The Mountaineers climbed back to make it a 22-17 game, but the Hawks closed out the set with 3 straight points led by junior Ellenburg.

The Mountaineers took the second set from the Hawks 25-23. The Hawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but the rest of the set would be a back and forth affair. Taking advantage of 7 errors by Huntingdon, Berea closed out the set with 10 kills.

Berea clinched the third set in another close scoring battle, winning 25-22. The Mountaineers took a 19-15 lead and the Hawks could not recover, having only 9 kills to Berea's 13 for the set on 47 attempts.

Huntingdon evened up the set count 2-2 with a 25- 21 4th set win. Similar to the second and third sets, neither team could take a significant lead through the first 9 points. The Hawks then went on a 8-1 scoring run, capitalizing on 6 Berea errors. Berea went on a run of their own, taking the lead 20-19, but a kill from Kennedy Chambers would give the Hawks the tying set.

In the tie-breaking set, Huntingdon dominated by a score of 15-8. Being led by Eva Ellenburg and Ashlen Janowski once again, the Hawks led by 9-4 early on and never looked back. Jessi Hilyer earned 4 assists in the set with 3 of them coming in the final points.

Match Two Against Piedmont:

In their second match of the day, Huntingdon Volleyball defeated the Piedmont Lions (14-14 Overall, 11-5 CCS) in 4 sets.

The first set belonged to the Hawks by a score of 25-14. The Hawks started slow, falling 6-2, but a kill from Lindsey Holland sparked a 7-1 scoring run for the Hawks. The Hawks were able to capitalize on 9 errors from the Lions in this set, only committing 4 themselves.

The Lions came out much stronger in the second set, defeating the Hawks 25-21. The Hawks offense struggled to get off the ground, only recording 8 kills on 37 attempts, while Piedmont recorded a match high 15 kills on 34 attempts.

Huntingdon bounced back in the third set, outlasting Piedmont 25-21. The Hawks jumped out to a 18-12 lead following a Piedmont error. Lindsey Holland continued her strong performance in this match, leading the Hawks to 43 attempts at the net, a match high. Nursing a 24-23 lead Molly Wilson would give the Hawks the final point to close the set.

Kennedy Chambers also achieved her 500th career kill during the third set.

The Hawks cruised through the 4th set, clinching the match 25-11. The Hawks jumped out to a 10-2 lead and never looked back. Ashlen Janowski continued to shine, earning 4 of her 8 kills in this set.
