Hawks hold on vs Welch

GALLATIN, Tenn.- Huntingdon Men's Basketball (5-5 Overall), defeated Welch College (4-4 Overall), 74-67.

 

Highlights

 

 

First Half

  • Myles Murphy capped off an opening 12-2 run at the 15:50 mark with a 3pt shot.
  • With 11:17 remaining, a layup by freshman BJ Brown would push the Hawks lead to 20-9. 
  • Welch quickly climbed within six at the 10:07 mark shortening the lead 22-16.
  • Welch would again push within six, 26-20 at 6:56. Over the next two minutes, the Hawks would then answer with a Marcus Townsend three pointer, a layup by BJ Brown, followed by another 3 pointer, this time from Chase Dumas, to push the lead to 34-22.
  • A Randal Davis layup with 1:55 remaining in the half would give Huntingdon their largest lead of the half, 42-26.
  • The Hawks led Welch at halftime 42-29.

Second Half

  • To begin the half, Max Gardner gave the Hawks their largest lead of the game at the 18:26 mark with a layup making the score 48-29.
  • Welch would outscore the Hawks 25-16 over the next eight minutes. However, Huntingdon still commanded the lead.
  • The Flames climbed within nine, closing the score to 64-57 with 8:27 to play.
  • A 3 ½ minute scoring drought for the Hawks would be broken by a Myles Murphy layup with 8:11 remaining with Huntingdon still in control 66-57.
  • An 8-0 run including six straight made free throws would pull the Flames within one, 66-65 with 3:19 to play.
  • Another scoring drought, this time five minutes long, would be broken on two made free throws from Tate Goolesby, giving the Hawks a 68-65 lead with three minutes left.
  • A Goolesby layup at 2:32 and a Townsend dunk at 2:04, would push the lead back up to 72-65.
  • Welch went 0-8 from behind the arc in the final three minutes of the game.
  • A couple of free throws from BJ Brown would give the Hawks their final points of the night, securing a 74-67 victory.

Key Notes

  • Huntingdon finished with a season high in turnovers – 27, rebounds – 65, and blocks – 7.
  • Huntingdon shot 8% from 3pt in the second half.  Welch shot 8% from 3pt in the first half.
  • The Hawks defense held Welch to 29% FG shooting and 22% 3-pt FG shooting.
  • The Hawks dominated the rebound battle 65-39.
