Hawks Push Division II Montevallo To Two Overtimes

MONTEVALLO, Ala.- In an exhibition matchup, Huntingdon men's basketball (6-6 overall) fell to the Division II Montevallo Falcons (2-8 overall) in double overtime 99-94.

 

Highlights 

 

First Half

  • Huntingdon began the game with frenetic energy, starting with a block from Tate Goolesby resulting in a three pointer from Jaylen Washington and following that sequence by forcing a Falcon turnover, allowing for Max Gardner to put in a layup, giving the Hawks an early 5-0 lead.

  • Montevallo responded to the Hawks quick start with an 11-2 run, putting them ahead of Huntingdon 11-7 with 16:42 remaining in the half.

  • A dunk from Nate Johns ended the Montevallo run and put the Hawks back within two, 11-9 with 16:31 remaining in the half.

  • A 10-2 run from the Falcons extended their lead to 21-11 with 13:55 remaining in the first half

  • A steal and fastbreak layup from freshman BJ Brown put Huntingdon back within a single digit deficit, 21-13, with 13:11 to go in the half.

  • Two free throws from BJ Brown halted a small scoring run from Montevallo, reducing the Falcon lead to 32-18 with 8 and a half minutes to go in the first.

  • At the 7:23 mark, a Nate Johns layup brought Huntingdon within 10, 32-22.

  • BJ Brown drilled a mid range shot to bring the Hawks within 8, 32-24

  • After trading baskets for the next couple of possessions, Montevallo closed the half on an 8-2 run, putting them ahead 46-33 at the break.

 

Second Half

  • Huntingdon started the second half with an unmatched sense of purpose, going on a 9-0 run that put them down 46-42 with 17:53 to go in regulation.

  • Following a Montevallo three pointer, the Hawks went on a 7-4 scoring run, capped off by a three pointer from DaQuan Hawkins, that put Huntingdon within one, 50-49, with 13 and a half minutes remaining in regulation.

  • After trading baskets back and forth, Huntingdon finally tied the game at 60 on a layup from Jaylen Washington with 6:47 to go in regulation.

  • A Max Gardner jumper at the 6:10 mark gave the Hawks their first lead of the half, 62-60.

  • Huntingdon went on their own 6-0 run once in control, gaining a 68-60 lead at the 4:13 mark.

  • Not to be outdone, the Falcons went on a 12-0 run, gaining a 72-68 lead with 1:42 remaining in regulation.

  • With 1:15 to go, Jaylen Washington drilled a three pointer to put the Hawks down 72-71.

  • After a missed free throw from Montevallo, BJ Brown scored a layup off of an offensive rebound by Max Gardner, tying the game at 73 with 22 seconds left in regulation.

  • A blocked shot by Gardner prevented a last second score by Montevallo and sent the game to its first overtime.

 

First Overtime

  • Montevallo struck first in OT, taking a 75-73 lead with 4:39 to go.

  • Jaylen Washington evened the score at 75 with a layup of his own at the 4:18 mark

  • Down 80-75 following a 5 point swing from Montevallo, BJ Brown knocked down a huge triple to put the Hawks down 80-78 with 2:37 remaining

  • After a string of missed free throws from both teams, a pull-up jumpshot from Max Gardner put the Hawks down 82-81 with 1:15 remaining

  • With 56 seconds remaining in the overtime period, Tate Goolesby gave Huntingdon a late 84-82 lead on an and-1.

  • A Huntingdon foul with 8 seconds remaining in the period put Montevallo at the free throw line, where they made both shots and sent the game to double overtime.

 

Second Overtime

  • Max Gardner struck first in the second overtime period, only to be matched by a bucket from the Falcons, making the score tied at 86 with 4:20 remaining.

  • A 4 point swing from Montevallo put Huntingdon down 90-86 with 2:38 to go, but sophomore Myles Murphy knocked down a clutch triple to bring the Hawks within one, 90-89

  • Following a Montevallo dunk, BJ Brown sunk another big-time three pointer, evening the score at 92 with 48 seconds remaining

  • With 33 seconds left, Montevallo made a three point shot, and the Hawks could not match it. Following a string of fouls and free throws, the Hawks were ultimately defeated 99-94.

 

Key Notes

  • Huntingdon made 11 of their 17 free throw attempts, while the Falcons knocked down 25 of their 34 tries.

  • Huntingdon outrebounded Montevallo 55-51

  • There were 9 ties and 5 lead changes in this matchup
