Hawks Can't Get It Going Against Paine

AUGUSTA, Ga.- In their final non-conference matchup of the season, Huntingdon men's basketball (6-7 overall) fell 82-68 to the NAIA Paine College Lions(3-8 overall).

 

Highlights 

 

First Half

  • Tate Goolesby opened up the scoring for the game on the Hawks first possession with a layup through traffic.

  • Two free throws on the Lions opening possession gave them their first points of the matchup.

  • After a minute and a half long dry spell for both teams, two more free throws from Paine gave the Lions a 4-2 lead at the 18:09 mark.

  • A 12-2 scoring run from Paine put the Hawks behind 14-4 with 14:33 remaining in the first half.

  • Nate Johns put in a layup off of a BJ Brown steal to bring the Hawks back within single digits, 14-6, at the 14:16 mark.

  • A 6-1 scoring run from the Lions put Huntingdon behind 20-7 near the 12 minute mark

  • Continuing to fight, the Hawks went on a 7-0 scoring run of their own, with baskets from Randall Davis and Marcus Townsend cutting the Paine lead to 20-14 with 10:11 remaining in the half

  • Following another short spurt from Paine, the two teams traded baskets on the following possession, putting the Hawks behind 30-20 with 6 minutes to go in the half.

  • Myles Murphy drilled a three pointer at the 5:45 point to put Huntingdon back within single digits, 30-23.

  • The Lions knocked down a triple of their own at the 4:18 mark to regain a double digit lead, 35-24.

  • A 9-0 run from Huntingdon led by BJ Brown brought the Hawks back within 5, 38-33, with 2 minutes to go till halftime

  • Two free throws from Tate Goolesby put the Hawks down 42-35 going into halftime.

 

Second Half

  • Paine opened up the second half scoring on their first possession with a shot from deep, giving them another double digit lead at 45-35

  • Max Gardner knocked down a free throw at the 17:58 mark to score the first second half point for the Hawks, bringing the score to 47-36

  • After trading baskets for the next couple of possessions, another triple from Paine gave the Lions their largest lead of the game so far, 59-44, with 14:38 remaining in the game

  • Another shot from deep from the Lions put them ahead 66-47 with 10:19 remaining in the contest

  • An 8-2 scoring run from Huntingdon put the Hawks down 74-61 with 3 minutes to go.

  • The Hawks went on a 6-0 run to close the game following a run from the Lions, but ultimately fell to Paine 82-68.

 

Key Notes

  • The Lions made 10 of their 24 shots from deep, limiting the Hawks to just 2 of their 11 attempts

  • Each team scored 38 of their points in the painted area

  • The Hawks capitalized on 20 of their 30 free throw attempts, while Paine made 14 of their 16 tries

Huntingdon opens up the new year with CCS conference play, traveling to Lookout Mountain, Georgia to take on Covenant on January 5th. Tip off is set for 4 PM CT.
