Maryville's Second Half Push Too Much For The Hawks

MARYVILLE,Tenn.- In their second duel of the season, Huntingdon men's basketball (9-12 overall, 3-5 CCS) came up short in a battle with the Maryville Scots (17-5 overall, 9-1 CCS) 101-90.

 

How it happened

 

First half

  • Tate Goolesby led the Hawks offense early, scoring the teams first 7 points of the night. Despite his hot start however, Huntingdon still trailed 8-7 at the 17:46 mark

  • The Hawks rallied around Goolesby's start by creating a 9-0 run, led by BJ Brown, to take a 16-8 lead at the 14:54 mark

  • The Scots responded to Huntingdon's run with an 8-0 run of their own, tying the game at 16 with 13 minutes remaining in the half

  • Over the next couple of possessions, the Hawks caught fire from beyond the arc, with Daquan Hawkins ringing in two from deep and BJ Brown also cashing one in to push the lead to 27-19 with 10 minutes to go until halftime

  • At the 5:55 mark, Maryville had battled back against the three point onslaught by the Hawks, evening the Score at 32

  • Maryville regained the lead at the 4:47 mark, 36-34, but hot shooting from Tate Goolesby and Daquan Hawkins carried the Hawks into halftime with a 48-46 lead

 

Second half

  • BJ Brown and Max Gardner put up 4 quick points to open the second half, holding the Hawks lead at 52-48 in the first minute

  • A 6-2 Scot run evened the score at 54 at the 18 minute mark

  • Another 6-0 run from Maryville gave the Scots a 60-56 lead with 15:45 to go

  • The Hawks continued to fight, trading baskets and stops over the next couple of possessions, but Maryville's offensive attack maintained their lead at 80-75 with 8 minutes to go

  • Nate Johns scored on consecutive possessions with a dunk and a short jumpshot to bring Huntingdon within 3, 82-79, with 7 minutes to go

  • Despite the Hawks best efforts, Maryville stayed hot from the free throw line and the three point arc, and the Hawks, battling foul trouble, simply ran out of time, taking a 101-90 loss.

 

Key Notes

  • Both teams shot well from the field, with Huntingdon converting on 44% of their shots and Maryville 50%

  • Huntingdon was hot from three point land, making 45% of their shots from deep

  • Huntingdon was outscored in the paint 44-34
