COVID-19 update from President West

From the Huntingdon College Office of Communications

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The following information was sent to the Huntingdon community from President J. Cameron West this evening:

Dear Huntingdon Family,

As COVID-19 coronavirus continues to spread worldwide, and the World Health Organization has declared the health crisis a global pandemic, we must consider operational changes in the interest of reducing the risk to the health and well-being of our students, faculty, and staff.  Thankfully, we do not have any cases of confirmed COVID-19 on campus or among our Huntingdon family at this time.

Huntingdon College will now have a two-week Spring Break for the Traditional Day Program, beginning Monday, March 16, and ending on Sunday, March 29.  This two-week break will give College officials the best opportunity to determine how we will finish the Spring Semester. Please note – We will finish the Spring Semester. Students, as you depart for Spring Break, you should take everything you may need for classes with you in the event that the College must consider remote instruction when classes resume.

Effective Friday, March 13, all activities of the College for the Traditional Day Program, including intercollegiate athletics, are canceled until Sunday, March 29.

Residence halls will close Sunday, March 15, at noon and will reopen Sunday, March 29, at noon.  The dining hall will close following brunch Sunday, March 15, and will reopen Sunday, March 29, for dinner.

If you have an extraordinary circumstance that will prevent you from leaving campus for Spring Break, please email Senior Vice President Anthony Leigh at aleigh@hawks.huntingdon.edu by Friday, March 13, at 5 p.m. in order to request alternate housing.

Some campus offices will be open as needed during the two-week Spring Break.  Security will remain open 24-7.  No visitors will be permitted on campus during this two-week break.

Students, faculty and staff are discouraged from unnecessary travel during this two-week interval.  All College-sponsored travel for business or other purposes has been canceled until further notice.  If you have been exposed to COVID-19 (you were in a gathering with someone else who has been diagnosed with the disease and were near that person for more than a few minutes and/or had physical contact with that person; you have cared for a person with COVID-19; you have cared for someone who is suspected of exposure to COVID-19; or you have traveled to an area in the United States that has a high level of COVID-19 incidents), self-quarantine for at least 14 days and notify the Office of Student Health Services and the Office of Student Affairs.

As we live into this new reality, there will be more information to come. In the meantime, please send your questions to Senior Vice President Anthony Leigh at aleigh@hawks.huntingdon.edu.

Thank you for your patience in this unprecedented time.

Faithfully your President,

J. Cameron West
