Hawks open season with win over Southwestern

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon baseball team knocked off Southwestern University 7-2 on Friday night in the Firehouse Classic at Posey Field. It was the season opener for both teams.

Junior pitcher Zach McGrady earned the win in seven innings, allowing three hits and one earned run while striking out four and walking one. After giving up two hits in the first inning and one hit in the second inning, McGrady did not allow a hit in his final five innings. Sophomore  C.J. Sauce pitched the final two innings, allowing one hit.

Senior left fielder Alec Raley and sophomore catcher Coleson Taylor drove in five of the Hawks' runs. Raley finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a run and Taylor had two RBIs and a run on a 1-for-2 night.

Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the first, Raley scored Huntingdon's first run of the game. A Raley single in the second inning scored Landon Sessions to put Huntingdon in front 3-2. Leading 4-2 in the fifth inning, the Hawks added three more runs on a RBI single by Taylor and a two-run double by Raley.

Junior Cody Shoemaker was 2-for-4 in his first game as a Hawk and Sessions and freshman Jay Jordan each scored twice. Senior Patrick Kucera had a run and a RBI and first baseman Hunter Long drove in the first run of the game for the Hawks (1-0).

Huntingdon returns to action in the Firehouse Classic on Saturday at Posey Field. The Hawks will play Randolph-Macon at 1:30 p.m.

The game will be the second of three games on Saturday. Randolph-Macon and Southwestern will play in the first game at 10 a.m. Southwestern and Millsaps will close out the day with a game at 5 p.m.
