Huntingdon opens conference play with shutout win

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon baseball team scored 11 runs in the first three innings and knocked off Greensboro College 12-0 on Friday night.

The game was shortened to seven innings by the USA South Athletic Conference's 12-run rule.

The Hawks (9-5, 1-0 USA South) and the Pride (4-12, 0-1 USA South) will play Game 2 of the series on Saturday at 3 p.m. Game 3 of the series is set for Sunday at noon.

Huntingdon sent 26 batters to the plate in the first three innings as the Hawks put together 12 hits. An RBI single by Alec Raley, a two-run single by Jay Jordan and an RBI single by Coleson Taylor put Huntingdon in front 4-0 in the first inning.

Huntingdon took advantage of a pair of Greensboro errors and another RBI single by Raley to make it 7-0 in the second inning. Dakota Beane scored on the first error and Raley scored on the second error.

Beane scored on another error in the third inning before Cody Shoemaker doubled in two runs and Anthony Spivey scored on a ground out by Mason Throneberry to make it 11-0. The Hawks closed the scoring in the fourth inning when Patrick Kucera scored on a sacrifice fly by Raley.

Raley was 2-for-3 and finished with three RBIs, three runs and two stolen bases. Kucera and Jordan Criswell each had three hits. Kucera was 3-for-4 with four runs and Criswell was 3-for-5 with one run.

Jordan had two hits and two RBIs and Beane had two hits and two runs. Shoemaker had two RBIs, Spivey scored twice and Throneberry and Taylor each drove in one run.

Zack Watson (3-1) pitched a complete game for the win and carried a two-hitter into the seventh inning. Watson struck out six, walked two and gave up four hits in the shutout.
