Hawks move to fifth in USA South standings with win over Methodist

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon baseball team scored six runs in the first four innings and knocked off Methodist University 10-3 on Friday night.

The Hawks (11-21, 8-8 USA South) and Monarchs (14-19, 6-10 USA South) will wrap up their three-game USA South Athletic Conference series with a doubleheader on Saturday. Game 1 is set for noon.

With the win, Huntingdon moves into a tie for fifth in the conference standings.

Senior Zach McGrady (4-6) picked up the win with his fourth complete game of the season. McGrady struck out seven, allowed four hits, walked five and gave up two earned runs in nine innings.

After giving up a single in the first inning, McGrady carried a one-hitter into the sixth inning. He allowed one single in the sixth inning and two singles in the eighth inning.

Leading 2-0 in the third inning, Huntingdon used a two-run single by Josh Hines to make it a four-run game. A two-run double by Taylor Fought made it 6-1 in the fourth inning.

The Hawks closed the scoring with four runs in the sixth inning. An RBI single by Wes Powell, a sacrifice bunt by Corey Lowe and a two-run single by Garrett Headley put Huntingdon in front 10-1.

Headley finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs and Hines was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run. Fought had two hits, two RBIs and a run and Joseph Calvert was 3-for-5 with a run.

Powell had two hits, scored twice and drove in one run, Cody Shoemaker and Lowe each had an RBI and a run and Robert Walker scored one run.
