Hawks Earn 3-1 Win Over Millsaps On Opening Day

JACKSON, Miss.- On opening day, Huntingdon baseball (1-0 overall) traveled to Jackson, Mississippi and took down the Majors of Millsaps College (0-1 overall) 3-1. Stellar pitching from Hawks Michael Driver, Jable Ramey, Jackson Joiner, and Closer Seth Killiam shut down any offensive momentum by the Majors.

 

Highlights

  • Noah Phillips got the Hawks first base hit of the season with a double in the top of the first inning, but the Majors grounded out the Hawks shortly after to close the frame

  • Millsaps struck first with bases loaded in the bottom of the first, earning their first run on a walk. With his back against the wall, Michael Driver struck out one and  forced a ground ball that turned into a double play to close the frame

  • The Hawks defense came alive after the first inning, not allowing a single base hit in the second, third, fourth, and fifth innings

  • Jordan Raley ripped a shot down the left side of the field, allowing for Jabez Sampson to bring in the first run for the Hawks this season.

  • Continuing to stifle the Majors offense, the Hawks were able to earn another run in the top of the eighth inning, with a single from Noah Phillips bringing in Christian Lasecki to give Huntingdon a 2-1 lead entering the final inning

  • After holding Millsaps to only one hit in the eighth inning, Jabez Sampson stole home in the top of the ninth to give the Hawks their third and final run of the day

  • Seth Killam forced a double play and a ground out in the bottom of the ninth to give Huntingdon a 3-1 opening day victory.

 

On the Mound

  • Michael Driver started the day for the Hawks, only allowing one base hit despite the Majors scoring a run

  • Jable Ramey took over for Driver in the bottom of the third inning, not giving up a single base it

  • Jackson Joiner followed Ramey on the mound in the 6th inning, only allowing one base hit to set up Seth Killiam to close

  • Seth Killam took the mound in the 7th inning, keeping Millsaps off the board and earning the victory for the Hawks

 

The Hawks look forward to hosting the Firehouse Classic beginning on February 16th. Their first game is set to begin on the 16th at 4:00 PM CT against MUW.
