Hawks Fall To MUW On Day 1 Of Firehouse Classic

MONTGOMERY,Ala.- Despite a valiant comeback effort, Huntingdon baseball (1-1 overall) fell to the Owls of MUW on day one of the Annual Firehouse Classic 8-6. The Hawks got out to a slow start, falling behind 5-0, but fought back to tie the score, only to fall shy of two runs.

 

Highlights

  • The Owls scored the first run of the day with a single in the top of the first inning

  • Daniel Patton earned the Hawks first base hit of the day in the bottom of the second inning following Michael Driver's excellent frame, earning three outs in as many batters

  • MUW scored their second run of the day in the top of the fourth inning following a Huntingdon pitching change with a single RBI down the third baseline

  • After an inning with no offensive production from either squad, the Owls found their rhythm in the top of the 6th inning, hitting three separate home run strikes to push their lead to 5-0

  • The Hawks responded in the bottom of the 6th inning with a sacrifice fly from Noah Phillips bringing in Christian Lasecki to make the score 5-1

  • Daniel Patton followed Phillips' RBI with one of his own, hitting a double to right field that allowed Daniel Phillips and Cade Morgan to earn the Hawks second  and third runs of the inning

  • Staying hot, Jabez Sampson grounded out on the next at bat, but his hit allowed for Matthew Robinson to bring in yet another run in the inning, bringing the score to 5-4

  • To close out the inning, a wild pitch from MUW allowed for Daniel Patton to make it home, evening the score at 5 going into the 7th inning

  • Not to be outdone, the Owls struck back to start the 7th inning with three runs, taking a 8-5 lead

  • Still battling, Matthew Robinson earned his second run of the day to cut the lead to 8-6

  • Despite their comeback efforts, the Hawks could not find a rhythm in the last two innings, falling 8-6 to MUW

 

On the Mound

  • #26 Michael Driver earned the start, allowing only two hits through three innings and giving up a run

  • #22 Evan Clark followed Driver, by giving up one base hit and one run

  • #24 Caleb Griffis allowed three base hits and three runs, but forced two strikeouts and two groundouts

  • #44 Gavin Gomez closed the game for the Hawks, striking out 5 Owls, but giving up three runs as well

 

The Hawks look to rebound on February 17th against Virginia Wesleyan in day two of the Firehouse Classic. Gametime is scheduled for 4:00 PM CT.
