Hawks Drop Game One At Maryville In Twelve Innings

MARYVILLE,Tenn.- In the first game of their conference series, Huntingdon baseball(14-9 overall, 5-2 CCS) was taken down by the Scots of Maryville College(12-11 overall, 2-1 CCS) 5-4 in 12 innings. In an even contest throughout, the Scots found life late and walked it off with a single to take game one.

Highlights

The Hawks struck first in the top frame with Daniel Patton reaching home to give Huntingdon a 1-0 lead. Huntingdon was able to hang on to this lead with starting pitcher JB Landrum keeping Maryville off the scoreboard until the bottom of the second, where a sacrifice fly from the Scots evened the score at 1. The next two innings were controlled by each team's defense, with the only recorded base hit going to the Hawks with a single from Matthew Robinson. Huntingdon broke the ice in the top of the fifth inning, with Jordan Raley securing a run off a walk with bases loaded. This lead didn't last long however, as a Hawk error allowed Maryville to tie the game at 2 in the following frame. The Scots took their first lead of the game 3-2 within the same frame off a sacrifice fly to center field. Not to be outdone, Seth Killam singled in the top frame of the sixth inning, allowing Davis Johnson to even the score at 3. Neither team would find home plate again until the ninth inning, where the Hawks took a 4-3 lead off a Cade Morgan single that allowed Daniel Phillips to score. With their backs against the wall, Maryville tied the game at 4 and forced extra innings with a single in the bottom of the ninth. Once the game reached extra innings, both offenses reached a stalemate for two innings. In the bottom of the twelfth inning, Maryville was able to score their fifth run with a single, taking a 5-4 victory.

On the mound

  • JB Landrum started the game for Huntingdon, allowing three runs on four hits with five strikeouts

  • Gavin Gomez relieved Landrum in the sixth inning, not allowing any runs on four hits and throwing two strikeouts

  • Seth Killam closed the game for Huntingdon and took his first loss of the season,allowing two runs on three hits with four strikeouts
