First Inning Tear Pushes The Hawks Past Piedmont

DEMORREST,Ga.- To close out their final road series of the regular season, Huntingdon baseball(17-16 overall, 7-8 CCS) defeated the Piedmont Lions(24-13 overall, 11-4 CCS) 4-3. The Hawks got off to a blazing start, scoring three runs in the opening frame to build the lead that they would hold throughout the entire contest.

Highlights

Huntingdon opened up the game with the best possible start, a home run from Daniel Phillips on the first at-bat to take a 1-0 lead. Later in the frame Daniel Patton flew out to left field, allowing Cade Morgan to cross home plate and give the Hawks a 2-0 lead. To close the inning, second baseman Byron McLain singled, bringing home Noah Phillips and bringing the score to 3-0. Throughout the first four innings, Seth Killam commanded the field from the mound, only allowing two base hits to keep the Hawks ahead. Huntingdon's fourth and final run would come in the top of the fifth inning, where a sacrifice fly from Matthew Robinson allowed Noah Phillips to cross home plate for the second time in the game. The Lions started to claw their way back into the game with three runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but Sam Tompkins polished off the victory with three outs in as many at-bats to close the ninth inning and give Huntingdon the victory.

 

On the mound

  • Through 6.2 innings, Seth Killam allowed three runs on 10 hits

  • Sam Tompkins struck out two Lions while not allowing any hits or runs to close out the game for Huntingdon.

The Hawks return to Neal Posey Field for their final series of the regular season against LaGrange. The first game is scheduled for 6:00 PM CT on May 2nd.
