
McFarling Stars As Huntingdon Shuts Down Wheaton
MONTGOMERY, Ala.- Looking to maintain their rhythm following their series sweep of MUW, Huntingdon Baseball squared off with the Thunder of Wheaton College on day 2 of the Firehouse Classic.
Starting pitcher Jacob McFarling starred for the Hawks, throwing 9 strikeouts while only allowing one base hit to anchor Huntingdon to an 8-1 victory.
How it happened
McFarling started the game off hot, striking out two batters in the top frame of the first inning to retire the side. At the plate, the Hawks struggled to find their rhythm, not securing a base hit until the bottom of the second inning, with Ethan Duhon singling through the left side. Nonetheless, the score remaining 0-0 heading into the third inning. Despite the Hawks offensive struggles, McFarling continued to anchor Huntingdon on the mound, allowing his first base hit in the top frame of the fifth inning before forcing two consecutive outs to give the Hawks another chance to break the ice.
Huntingdon's first run of the game came in the fifth inning, as Jay Davidson brought home Ty Pruitt to give the Hawks a slight 1-0 lead. Brent Cadenhead followed Davidson in the sixth inning with a single to score Byron McLain and Sam Kelley, extending the Hawks advantage to 3-0. Jabez Sampson's single RBI at the following at bat brought the score to 4-0 entering the 7th inning.
The Hawks lone run of the 7th inning came from McLain's bat, singling up the middle to bring home Brodie Holcomb, pushing the lead to 5-0. The Thunder scored in the top of the 8th to bring the score to 5-1, but a three run explosion from the Hawks in the bottom frame, featuring scores from Cadenhead, Sampson, and Davidson, put Wheaton away and give Huntingdon the 8-1 win.
22 Evan Clark relieved McFarling in the 9th inning, pitching one strikeout to secure Huntingdon's victory.
Huntingdon returns to action at the Firehouse Classic tomorrow, February 23rd, in a double-header against Mt. St. Joseph and Emory. Games are scheduled for 12:00 and 3:30 PM CT.
