Eight-Run Inning Fuels Huntingdon's Victory Over Millsaps
MONTGOMERY, Ala.- Looking to avenge their loss to the Tornadoes of Brevard College yesterday, Huntingdon Baseball returned to the win column emphatically, shutting down Millsaps 11-0. The Hawks were boosted by an explosive third inning, scoring 8 of their runs in one frame to command an early lead.
How it happened
Through the first two innings, neither team could generate any momentum at the plate, with only 3 base hits recorded between the two squads. Huntingdon's first run of the game came in the third inning, as a catcher's interference call with the bases loaded brought home Jay Davidson to make the score 1-0. At the next two at bats, the Majors would hit Dalton Kuhn and throw a passed ball, scoring Cade Morgan and Sam Kelley to extend the lead to 3-0. Byron McLain followed up with a single through the left side to score both Kuhn and Holcomb, bringing the lead to 5-0 before Ty Pruitt's RBI double made the score 6-0. Runs from Pruitt and Brent Cadenhead to close the frame left the Hawks in the lead with a commanding 8-0 advantage entering the fourth inning. A quiet fourth inning for Huntingdon made way for another explosive offensive frame in the fifth inning, which Brodie Holcomb sparked with an RBI triple to bring home Sam Kelley and Cade Morgan. McLain's sacrifice fly shortly after returned the favor to Holcomb, bringing him across home plate to push the advantage to 11-0. To close the game in seven innings, the Hawks continued to control the pace of the game from the mound, not allowing any hits to secure Huntingdon's double-digit victory.
Parker Szush pitched all seven innings and picked up his first win on the season, allowing just one hit while throwing 12 strikeouts to maintain Huntingdon's lead.
The Hawks close out non-conference play tomorrow, March 9th, at home against MUW. First pitch is set for 3:30 PM CT.
