Holcomb's Walk-Off Caps Off Huntingdon's Sweep Of Asbury
MONTGOMERY, Ala.- After clinching the series with two victories in their double-header yesterday, Huntingdon Baseball returned to Neal Posey Field in search of a conference sweep against Asbury University.
The Eagles came out of the gates swinging as they looked to collect their third conference win of the season, entering the bottom of the 7th inning with a 7-0 lead. With their backs against the wall, the Hawks caught fire late, forcing extra innings before Brodie Holcomb's walk-off single in the eleventh inning gave Huntingdon an 8-7 victory.
How it happened
As previously mentioned, Asbury jumped ahead early, taking a 2-0 lead into the second inning before extending it to three runs by the fourth inning. The Eagles tacked on four more runs in the sixth inning to sit firmly in control of a 7-0 advantage coming down the stretch.
Huntingdon's first run came in the bottom of the seventh, as Sam Kelley singled down the middle of the field to score Brodie Holcomb, cutting the deficit to 7-1 entering the eighth inning. Three consecutive Eagle outs made way for Huntingdon to continue clawing away, and Brent Cadenhead's following frame brought life to the Hawks offense, scoring Ty Pruitt and Jabez Sampson as the Asbury lead shrunk to 7-3. Blayne McDaniel returned the favor to Holcomb at the following at-bat with a rbi single, putting Huntingdon down three runs as the final inning got underway.
The Hawks offense took advantage of three more Eagle outs, kicking off another rally with an error to score both Sam Kelley and Dylan Hyder as the deficit was reduced to 7-6. With two outs on the board, Blayne McDaniel drilled a clutch single down the middle of the field, scoring Ty Pruitt to even things at 7, forcing extra innings.
Brodie Holcomb secured victory for the Hawks in the 11th inning, singling through the left side to score Pruitt again, giving the Hawks an 8-7 victory.
