Hawks Take Back Wesley Cup, Beat BSC 38-35

Birmingham, Ala.-Huntingdon Football defeated #25 ranked Birmingham-Southern 38-35, and claimed the Wesley Cup for the first time since 2017.

Kahari McReynolds scored first for the Hawks with a 31-yard rush at 5:28 of the first quarter. BSC answered back at 3:51 with a 25-yard touchdown pass. 

McReynolds completed a 5-yard rush at 13:08 of the second quarter to make it 14-7 but again, BSC answered at 12:49 with a 68-yard touchdown pass. Troy Garner rushed 3 yards for a touchdown at 9:11 of the second quarter to make it 20-14. BSC scored at 8:18 to come within one but the Hawks extended the lead going into halftime with a 15-yard field goal by Nic Lee

BSC regained the lead at 1:50 of the third quarter with a 78-yard rush and a successful 2-point conversion attempt. At 7:16 of the 4th quarter, the Hawks took the lead with a 28-yard rush from McReynolds, making it 30-29. Birmingham-Southern completed a 5-yard run to take a 35-30 lead 4:10 of the fourth quarter. With 1 minute left, Landon Cotney found Kyler Chaney on a 13-yard pass to give the Hawks a 36-35 lead and a successful 2-point conversion secured the 38-35 win.

Quarterback Landon Cotney was 23-30 with 317 yards and 1 touchdown. McReynolds totaled 210 yards on 24 attempts with 3 touchdowns. Tyler England had 8 catches for 117 yards. Tucker Spence led the Hawks' defense with 6 tackles. Ty Brown and Casey Peppers each had 5 tackles with Peppers adding a sack for a loss of 5 yards. 

"I'm really proud of the way our guys continued to fight," Head Coach Mike Turk said. "We made a ton of mistakes and it would have been easy for our guys to think that it wasn't going to be their night. They kept believing in each other though, and we found a way to win."

The Hawks travel to Guilford on Saturday, September 17th. Game time is scheduled for 12:00 PM CST.
