Hawks Football Drops Season Opener to Berry

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. – Huntingdon Football fell to the Vikings of Berry in their season opener game on the road, 67-34.

It was the Vikings who struck first in the starting 40 seconds of the game with a 25-yard rush in their second play. The Hawks quickly responded as RJ White returned a 96-yard kickoff and sparked energy for his team (7-7).

With the game tied at seven within the first minute of the game, the Hawks pushed the ball down the field in ten plays and thirty yards to set up Will Edwards for a 24-yard field goal to take the lead in the first period.

After a 61-yard kickoff, Berry returned the ball to the 35 and snapped the ball for a hand-off to Josh Rogers for a 61-yard touchdown to steal back the lead (14-10).

Both defenses stepped up their games on the next drive as Berry caused the Hawks to punt and sophomore Jacoby Young intercepted the ball at the Huntingdon 36-yard line and ran it back 64-yards for a Hawks defensive touchdown (17-14).

At the start of the second period, 4th and 7, the Hawks had the ball on the Berry 13. Will Edwards headed to the field to kick on through to push the Hawks lead to six.

The next five drives for the Hawks were ended by the Vikings before heading to halftime down 36-20.

Huntingdon received the ball to begin the second half but could not was unable to respond to the Vikings 14 points in the third.

Berry landed a field goal to begin the third quarter after a 1:32 drive to shoot up 53-20.

The Hawks began with the ball on the 35 after the kickoff and Troy Garner received the ball on the next two plays for two gains. Starting quarterback, Carson Daniel, completed two passes for a combined 42 yards to put Garner in position to run up the middle for a 16-yard Hawk touchdown (53-27).

The Vikings responded with a touchdown of their own before Daniel's posted the last touchdown for the Hawks with a 24-yard pass to Sam Bloodworth.

Game Notes:

Berry had 20 first downs compared to the Hawks 13 and Huntingdon's third down efficiency was 33% for the night.

The Vikings offense had 197 more yards than the Hawks.

Carson Daniels, the Hawks quarterback had 12 completions for 133 yards and running back Kahari McReynolds had one of his own for 36 yards.

Hawks Kicker, Will Edwards was 2-2 for field goals and 4/4 on extra point attempts.

The Hawks return to Montgomery, Alabama next Saturday to take on Birmingham-Southern at 6:00 PM CT.
