Hawks Football Rights The Ship At Southern Virginia

BUENA VISTA, Va.- Looking to get back in the win column following three consecutive conference losses, Huntingdon football(4-5 overall, 4-3 USA South) put together a complete performance on the road, shutting out the Knights of Southern Virginia University(1-8 overall, 1-6 USA South) 51-0.

Deferring until the second half, Huntingdon's defense took the field to open the game. The Knights struck with a 30 yard chunk-play, but the Hawks stood solid and forced a punt on the game's first possession. Dorian Smith then led Huntingdon's offense on a 10 play, 90 yard drive that resulted in a six yard touchdown run from Troy Garner to give Huntingdon a 7-0 lead with 5 minutes remaining in the quarter.

The Knights looked to respond, but a deflection from Jahmir Cromblin forced another Southern Virginia punt.  James Cheatham capitalized on the Hawks stop with his second endzone visit this season to bring Huntingdon's lead to 14-0 entering the second quarter. With Huntingdon's defense forcing another stop on the first drive of the second quarter, Will Edwards sank a field goal from 35 yards out to push Huntingdon's lead to 17-0 with 9:52 remaining in the first half.

Southern Virginia's next possession showed promise with a first down pass on the second play, but a Fred Lawson sack cut the drive short and flipped possession back to Huntingdon. A 19 yard touchdown run by Dorian Smith grew the Hawks lead to 23-0 on the ensuing possession with 4:49 to go until halftime.

Muffing the following kickoff, Zander Bonifay's fumble recovery allowed for Brody Covington to find the endzone one last time before the break to make the halftime score 30-0.

Coming out of the locker rooms, Arthur Woods took the opening kickoff 93 yards to the house, finding the endzone for the first time of his career and pushing Huntingdon's lead to 37-0 early in the second half. Whitt Spurlock would stuff the Knight's fourth and two run attempt on the following drive, but the Hawks would be forced to punt for the first time of the game on the next possession.

Bailey Huston went on to intercept his second pass of the season on the Knight's next drive, but the offense couldn't capitalize, turning the ball over on downs. Huntingdon's lead grew to 44-0 with six minutes remaining in the third quarter, with Jake White finding Woods for his second touchdown of the afternoon and his career.  Fred Lawson would score the final points of the game, recovering a fumble forced by Ty Martinez and taking 85 yards for a Huntingdon touchdown to bring the score to 51-0.

Throughout the fourth quarter, Huntingdon's defense held their own as the offense ran out the clock, handing the Hawks a conference victory on the road.
