Madison’s 33 points not enough for Hawks in loss to Brevard

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Sophomore Damien Madison scored a career-high 33 points but the Huntingdon men's basketball team came up short 83-81 against Brevard College on Friday night.

Madison's 33 points are the most by a Hawk since Jason Varney scored 36 against LaGrange in February 2014 and the fifth most by a Huntingdon player during the NCAA era. Forrest Smith set the program record with 46 points during the 1999-00 season and Leon Frazier Jr. set Huntingdon's NCAA-era record with 37 points during the 2009-10 season.

Madison, who was 13-for-15 from the free-throw line, leads the USA South with 93 made free throws this season. He is third in the conference in total scoring (294 points) and fourth in points per game (17.3)

Huntingdon fell behind in the first nine minutes of the game and did not lead in the final 31 minutes. The Hawks trailed by as many as 11 points in each half, before making a late push in the second half.

After falling behind 62-51 with 9:44 to play, Huntingdon used a 20-9 run to tie the game. Madison scored 11 of the Hawks' 20 points to help tie the game 71-71 with 3:07 remaining.

But the Hawks could not pull ahead. Instead, Brevard answered with a 9-2 run and eased ahead to an 80-73 lead with 16 seconds to play. Madison scored the Hawks' final eight points, including a basket at the buzzer, but Huntingdon came up just short.

Behind Madison's 33 points, Aaron Washington scored 11 points and Mykel Woods had nine points and 12 rebounds. Charvez' Hobson had eight points, eight rebounds and three steals and Caleb Toney had seven points and eight rebounds.
