Hawks Take Down the Majors in the Hawks Classic

Montgomery, Alabama – In day one of the Hawks Classic, sponsored by Moe's Southwest Grill, the Hawks defeated the Majors of Millsaps 83-65.

In the first half Millsaps led from the tip with an early three from Bush. With Millsaps shooting 45 percent from beyond the arc, the Hawks only faced a deficit as large as 5 with 11:52 left in the first half. Huntingdon then went on a 10-0 run in 3 minutes to take the lead and bring the score to 20-15. Sparked by a lay-up from Phillips, the Majors went on an 8-0 run of their own at the 6:00 minute mark, Millsaps now led 23-20. The lead was answered by a three from Nate Johns to tie the game at 23. Taking the lead with 3 minutes remaining in the first half with a pair of made free throws by Max Gardner, the Hawks would maintain their lead until halftime with a 5-point game. (35-30)

First half key stats:

Nate Johns earned half his points in the first, with 9, and one being beyond the arc.

Max Gardner snagged 4 rebounds for the half.

The Hawks shot 40% from the field and 37% from three.

 

To begin the second half, Huntingdon went on a 5-0 run led by a 3 pointer from Nate Johns which boosted the Hawks to their largest lead of the night, 10. (40-30) Millsaps exchanged another 5-0 run of their own to cut the game back to 5. Going shot for shot, the Hawks slowly started to lose their lead with big buckets from the Majors to tie the game at 59 points with 8:51 remaining in the game, but this would be the last tie of the game. Hawks began to pull away after made free throws from both Sam Page and Tate Goolesby; bringing the lead to 13 with 2:15 second left. Huntingdon finished the game with a 12-0 run and final score of 78-65.

 

Second half key stats:

Sam Page would add 11 points for the Hawks.

Freshman Myles Murphy came off the bench to add 7 points.

The Hawks shot 51% from the field and 45% from beyond the arc (making 5 threes in the second half).

#3 Nate Johns – 18 Points, 6 Rebounds

#20 Tate Goolesby – 15 Points, 6 Rebounds

#4 Sam Page – 14 Points, 6 Rebounds

 

The Hawks return to action Sunday 11/13/2022 to compete in day two of the Hawks Classic at 5 pm against the Berry Vikings.
