Hawks Take Overtime Victory At Lyon

BATESVILLE, Ark.- Kicking off a three game road stretch, Huntingdon men's basketball defeated the Scots of Lyon College(4-5 overall, 2-1 SLIAC) 99-94 in an overtime thriller to advance to 8-0 on the season. How it happened

First Half

  • The Scots came out of the gates firing, opening the game on a 7-2 run through the first two and a half minutes. Martise Jackson's triple at the 17:31 mark stopped the bleeding momentarily, but Lyon managed to push their lead to 14-5 by the 16:19 mark
  • Looking to claw back into things, Jaylen Washington and Jeremy Autin knocked down consecutive three pointers, bringing the score to 18-13 by the 14:37 mark
  • Staying hot from behind-the-arc, RayQuan Taylor's triple at the 13:39 mark sparked an 11-0 Huntingdon run that lasted over the course of the following two minutes. As a result, Huntingdon led 24-20 entering the final 10 minutes of the half
  • The two teams would continue to trade baskets as the half came to a close, but just as the Scots began to draw near, BJ Brown and Martise Jackson each found room around the rim to maintain Huntingdon's lead 40-31 with 2:24 remaining
  • 5 consecutive points from Jaylen Washington brought Huntingdon's lead to 45-36 entering the halftime break.

Second Half

  • Flipping the script from the start of the first half, this time the Hawks got things going with a 7-2 run in the early stages, with BJ Brown, Martise Jackson, and Nate Johns all contributing as Huntingdon's lead built to 52-38 by the 17:54 mark
  • Following their opening run, the Hawks caught fire from deep- with 9 consecutive points coming from behind the arc. Jeremy Autin's second triple of the game and third of the run pushed Huntingdon's advantage to 61-41 by the 15 minute mark
  • The Scots cashed in on three shot attempts, but the Hawks continued to pour it on, with RayQuan Taylor and BJ Brown each converting on chances that extended the lead to as much as 70-47 by the 12:20 mark
  • Looking to battle back, Lyon opened up a 11-0 run over the course of the next four minutes to cut Huntingdon's lead to 71-57
  • Nate Johns' layup at the 7:19 mark brought the Hawks lead to 74-61, but the Scots responded with a run of their own to make the score 74-67
  • Four consecutive points from BJ Brown put Huntingdon back in double-digit control, 78-67, with five minutes remaining, but another 7-0 Scot run saw the Hawks lead shrink to 78-74 with 3:26 to go in regulation
  • As the game drew near, Jaylen Washington and Brown each converted on shots to try and hold off the Scots, but Lyon caught fire, drilling a jumper at the buzzer to tie the game at 86 and force overtime

Overtime

As the overtime period began, the first six points of the period belonged to Huntingdon, more specifically, BJ Brown, as he drilled four free throws in an effort to put Huntingdon in front. The Scots drilled to triple's late to try and cut into the lead, but largely in part due to good free throw shooting and stout defense, the Hawks were able to walk away with a 99-94 victory over Lyon.

  • Huntingdon continued their season-long dominance on the boards, outrebounding the Scots 48-44
  • The Hawks were hot from three, shooting 45% from behind-the-arc
