Hawks Claim Narrow Victory At Piedmont

DEMOREST, Ga.- Looking to move to 2-0 in conference play following their 9 point victory over LaGrange at home, Huntingdon men's basketball traveled to Piedmont University for a match with the Lions. After jumping out to an 11 point first half lead, the Hawks were outscored by 9 points in the second half, but BJ Brown converted on three out of four tries from the free throw line to hand Huntingdon the 76-74 victory.

First Half

  • Piedmont struck first in the form of an 8-2 run through the opening two and a half minutes before Myles Murphy's triple at the 16:49 mark stopped the bleeding
  • DaQuan Hawkins followed Randall Davis' free throw at the 15:02 mark with a shot from deep to reduce Piedmont's lead to 13-11 by the 14 minute mark
  • Trailing 22-15, the Hawks put together an 18-0 run over the next five minutes, featuring baskets from Murphy, RayQuan Taylor, BJ Brown, and Marcus Townsend to hold a 33-22 lead with five and a half minutes remaining until halftime
  • The Lions responded with a 5-0 run of their own, but Randall Davis' dunk at the 3:26 mark stopped the bleeding. 
  • Keyshawn Dickey's triple with 36 seconds remaining capped off a 8-3 Huntingdon run that gave the Hawks a 41-30 lead at halftime

Second Half

  • Similar to the first half, the Lions came out swinging to start the second half, using an 8-3 run through the first five minutes to cut Huntingdon's lead to 44-38 by the 15:53 mark
  • Nate Johns cashed in on his first three pointer of the season to push Huntingdon's lead back to 9, 47-38, by the 15:46 mark
  • Johns kept the hot hand, finishing through contact at the 11:48 mark to bring the lead back to double-digits 54-44
  • An 8-2 run for the Lions brought Piedmont back withi four, 56-52 by the 9:24 mark
  • By the 5:26 mark, Huntingdon's lead had been cut to just one, 61-60 before Martise Jackson's three pointer stopped the bleeding
  • Baskets from both Jackson and RayQuan Taylor upped Huntingdon's lead to 69-63 with three minutes to go, but Piedmont kept battling, bringing the deficit back to one, 69-68
  • As the game drew near, Piedmont continued to battle, but the Hawks stayed strong at the free throw line to remain in front, walking away with a 76-74 victory
