The Hawks Go Cold At Maryville

MARYVILLE, Tenn.- Looking to bounce back following a tough loss at home to Belhaven, Huntingdon men's basketball kicked off the first of a two-game road trip against Maryville. 

The Hawks entered the second half down just three points, but were outscored by 17 points in the second half, falling 91-71 to the Scots.

First Half

  • Maryville flew out of the gates, sinking a three at the 17:23 mark to extend their lead to 7-3. Less than a minute later, another successful shot from deep put the Scots ahead 14-7
  • Led by Ray'Quan Taylor and Jeremy Autin, Huntingdon pieced together an 8-2 run to bring the score to 21-18 with 12 minutes remaining in the half
  • Maryville answered with a 15-2 run of their own, pushing their lead to 36-20 by the 7:45 mark
  • Not to be outdone, back-to-back baskets from Nate Johns and Jaylen Washington sparked an 11-2 Huntingdon run, cutting the Hawks deficit to 38-31 just inside the four minute mark following a layup from BJ Brown
  • Autin followed baskets from Martise Jackson and Keyshawn Dickey with a triple, bringing the Hawks within one, 40-39 with 2 minutes to go in the half. BJ Brown followed up, matching Scot baskets with consecutive three-pointers of his own to even things at 45 with 1:18 to go in the half. Another three pointer for Maryville gave the Scots a 48-45 halftime lead

Second Half

  • Boosted by baskets from Johns and Washington, the Hawks took a 49-48 lead by the 18:45 mark in the half
  • Maryville responded with a 9-2 run to go ahead 57-51 with 16:33 remaining in regulation
  • Huntingdon continued to battle, with Taylor and Jackson generating offense that evened things at 57 with 14 and a half minutes to go
  • The Scots pieced together a 9-2 run over the next five minutes to lead 68-59 entering the final 10 minutes
  • BJ Brown momentarily stopped the bleeding with a layup at the 9:34 mark, but Maryville continued to pour it on, pushing their lead to as much as 87-69 with 2:18 to go. In the end, the Hawks couldn't generate enough momentum offensively, falling 91-71

Key Notes

  • The Hawks were outscored 43-26 in the second half
  • Maryville shot 55% from the field for the game, limiting Huntingdon to 37%
  • Huntingdon outrebounded the Scots 45-32, but turned the ball over 5 more times

The Hawks have an opportunity to bounce back tomorrow, February 8th, as they face Asbury on the road. Tip-off is set for 3:00 PM CT.
