Men’s golf moves up one spot after Rd. 2 of Jekyll Island Collegiate

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – The Huntingdon men's golf team shaved nine strokes off its first-round score to shoot 301 in the second round of the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational on Saturday.

Entering Sunday's final round, the Hawks are in 22nd with a two-round total of 611. Illinois Wesleyan leads the 30-team field at 582. Oglethorpe is second at 583 and St. John Fisher College is third at 586.

"We showed improvement today," Huntingdon Director of Golf Dave Schreyer said. "All of the boys are hitting the ball solid. It's just a case of one or two bad swings leading to big numbers. We have to stop compounding our mistakes and learn to salvage our rounds."

Senior Griffin Just led the Hawks with a 2-over-par 74 on Saturday and is 10 strokes off the lead with a two-round total of 150. Junior Steven Smith and senior Jamey Lester each shot 3-over 75 in the second round. After 36 holes, Smith is at 153 and Lester is at 154.

With a 77 on Saturday, freshman Will Thrash is at 157 and senior Rodes Bowers is at 159.

Oglethorpe's Anthony Maccaglia and Hampden-Sydney's Rick O'Connell are tied for first at 4-under 140. Maccaglia led the field on Friday with a 4-under 68 and O'Connell was one of two Hampden-Sydney golfers to shoot 68 on Saturday.
