Men’s golf climbs to 3rd after Rd. 2 of USA South Tournament

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – The Huntingdon men's golf team moved into third place after the second round of the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday.

The Hawks shot 297 in the second round at Benvenue Country Club to give them a two-round total of 603. After two rounds, LaGrange led the nine-team field at 573 and Methodist was second at 591.

Due to weather forecasts for Sunday, the first nine holes of the final round were also played on Saturday. With nine holes remaining, LaGrange is even-par for the tournament and Methodist is 15-over for the tournament. Huntingdon and Greensboro are tied for third at 34-over.

Sophomore Will Thrash led Huntingdon in the second round, shaving nine strokes off his first-round score. Thrash tied his best collegiate round with a 2-under 70 on Saturday and shot 149 in the first two rounds. He is 2-over in the final round and tied for 12th in the tournament.

Sophomore Garrett Harrison took five strokes off his first-round score and shot a 1-over 73. Harrison had a 151 after two rounds and is 1-over in the final round and tied for 15th.

Freshman Mac Harris followed up his first-round 74 with a 3-over 75 in Round 2 for a 149 through two rounds. He is 4-over in the final round and tied for 18th.

Junior David James was at 155 after two rounds, is 2-over in the final round and tied for 22nd. Senior Steven Smith shot 157 in the first two rounds, is 2-over in the final round and tied for 25th.

LaGrange senior Cory Howard is the tournament leader. Howard shot a 3-under 69 on Friday and a 2-under 70 in the second round. He is 1-under in the final round and 6-under for the tournament.
