Thrash and Hawks earn wins in Callaway Gardens Intercollegiate

PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. – Huntingdon junior Will Thrash earned his first collegiate win and the men's golf team won its second straight event with the completion of the Callaway Gardens Intercollegiate on Tuesday.

Thrash won the two-round tournament with a 3-under-par 141 and Huntingdon captured the team win with a 6-over 582. Defending Division III national champion Methodist finished three strokes behind Huntingdon at 585.

"This was an awesome day," Huntingdon Director of Golf Dave Schreyer said. "Callaway is one of the premiere Division III events and a victory today was very sweet. This is two wins in-a-row and the boys are rolling with confidence. I'm really proud of the guys for their determination today. We didn't play as well today but we kept grinding."

Callaway was the second straight tournament win for the Hawks. Huntingdon closed the fall season with a win in the O'Briant-Jensen Memorial. The two wins are the first team wins for the Hawks since the 2010-11 season.

The Hawks shot a 1-over 289 on Monday and closed the tournament with a 5-over 293 on Tuesday to win the 17-team tournament. In addition to Methodist, Huntingdon finished in front of three other top-10 teams (Oglethorpe, Berry and Rhodes).

Thrash, after turning in his best collegiate round with a 3-under 69 on Monday, shot an even-par 72 in the final round to earn medalist honors.

"It was great to see Will finish off a win," Schreyer said. "He has been close many times, but it's great for him to have his first win in the books."

Junior Addison Lambeth finished two strokes behind Thrash and tied for second with a 1-under 143. Lambeth shot a 1-under 71 in the first round and an even-par 72 in the final round.

Lambeth closed the fall season as the medalist in the O'Briant-Jensen Memorial. The wins by Thrash and Lambeth are the first individual wins for the Hawks since 2012.

Senior David James shot an even-par 72 on Tuesday to finish with a two-round 150, followed by freshman Stephen Shephard at 151 and junior Chad Ring at 152.

Playing as individuals, sophomore Jon Colten Stanaland finished 14th with a 36-hole total of 148 and junior Wesley Etheredge shot 163.

Huntingdon returns to action in the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational on March 18.
