James’ 6-under 66 leads Huntingdon in Rd. 2 at Jekyll Island

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – Huntingdon senior David James turned in his best collegiate round and the Huntingdon men's golf team move to fifth in the second round of the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational.

James fired a 6-under-par 66 on Saturday and the seventh-ranked Hawks shot a 4-under 284 to climb from 13th to fifth. With a two-round total of 1-over 577, the Hawks are seven strokes out of first entering Sunday's final round.

In a field that features 12 of the top-20 Division III teams, fifth-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps leads the tournament at 6-under 570. Christopher Newport is second at 2-under 574, 19th-ranked LaGrange is third at 1-under 575 and Emory is fourth at even-par 576.

"We had a terrible start today and we were 5-over through seven holes. But then the fireworks started as the boys made 16 birdies and an eagle," Huntingdon Director of Golf Dave Schreyer said. "It was really exciting to watch. This team is loaded with talent and you never know which one of them will be the hero. Today it was David James. He really turned it on today."

James' 66 is the best round by a Huntingdon golfer since the 2008-09 season and the best Huntingdon round at Jekyll Island since the 2005-06 season.

With a 3-under 141 entering the final round. James is five strokes off the lead and tied for eighth. Teammate Addison Lambeth is also tied for eighth. Lambeth, a junior who is ranked sixth in Division III, shot a 2-under 70 on Friday and a 1-under 71 in the second round.

Ferrum's Brandon Bailey and LaGrange's Logan Lanier are tied for the tournament lead at 8-under 136. Bailey also shot a 6-under 66 on Saturday.

Behind James and Lambeth Huntingdon sophomore Jon Colten Stanaland shot a 2-over 74 in both rounds and is tied for 59th at 4-over 148. Junior Will Thrash turned in a 1-over 73 in the second round and is 6-over for the tournament and tied for 80th at 150. Junior Chad Ring is 10-over through two rounds at 154.
