Thrash earns medalist honors as Hawks win DIII Preview by 21 strokes

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. – Senior Will Thrash and the third-ranked Huntingdon men's golf team closed out the NCAA Division III Fall Preview with the first win of the season on Tuesday.

In an 18-team field with 16 nationally ranked teams, Thrash earned medalist honors and the Hawks won the team title by 21 strokes. Three Hawks (Thrash, senior Addison Lambeth and junior Jon Colten Stanaland) finished in the top-six.

"This is a great win. To win on this stage, against this field, really validates the strength of our squad," Huntingdon Director of Golf Dave Schreyer said. "I'm so proud of the boys. We started poorly today, but we were poised enough to accept the challenge and we found our stride."

Huntingdon, which shot a 6-under 282 in the first round and a 5-over 293 in the second round, carried a commanding 18-stroke lead into Tuesday's final round at Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort.

The Hawks shot 5-over-par 293 in the final round to finish at 4-over 868 for the tournament. Fifth-ranked Wittenberg was second at 889.

The 868 is tied for Huntingdon's second best 54-hole total during the NCAA era. Huntingdon shot an 864 at Jekyll Island during the 2008-09 season and an 868 at the Golfweek Fall Invitational during the 2010-11 season.

Thrash earned his second career win with the Hawks. The Prattville native shot a 4-under 212 to win the tournament by three strokes. Thrash opened the tournament with a career-best 5-under 67, shot 3-over 75 in the second round and finished with a 2-under 70 in the final round.

Thrash's 212 is Huntingdon's third best 54-hole total during the NCAA era and two strokes off the Hawks' NCAA-record for 54 holes. Mack Duke set the mark with a 6-under 210 during the 2008-09 season. Chase Blaich shot 5-under 211 during the 2010-11 season.

Lambeth finished four strokes behind Thrash and tied for third with an even-par 216. Stanaland finished seven strokes out of first and tied for sixth with a 3-over 219. Lambeth and Stanaland each shot 2-over 74 in the final round.

Senior Chad Ring tied for 15th with a 7-over 223 and freshman Alex Aulerich tied for 33rd with an 11-over 227.

Huntingdon returns to action in the Gordin Classic on Sept. 25.
