TUNICA, Miss. – Three Hawks turned in career-best rounds and the third-ranked Huntingdon men's golf team took a nine-stroke lead on the opening day of the Rhodes College Fall Classic.

After two rounds on Sunday at Tunica National Golf Resort, Huntingdon enters Monday's final round with a 6-under-par 570. The Hawks shot 2-over 290 in the opening round and followed up with an 8-under 280 in the second round.

Fourteenth-ranked Southwestern is second in the 20-team tournament at 3-over 579. Webster is third at 10-over 586.

Senior Drew Mathers, one week after shooting his best collegiate round with a 6-under 66 to win the NCAA DIII Fall Preview, fired a 7-under 65 in the opening round on Sunday. Mathers followed up with a 2-under 70 in the second round on Sunday and leads the tournament by one stroke with a 9-under 135.

Mathers' 7-under-par broke the Hawks' NCAA-era record for most strokes under-par in a single round. He was one of seven Hawks tied for the previous record of 6-under-par in a round.

Mathers' 65 is one stroke off the Hawks' NCAA-era record of 64 and his two-round 135 is two strokes off the program's NCAA-era record of 133. Both records were set by former Division III Golfer of the Year Addison Lambeth.

In addition to Mathers, sophomores Carson Whitton and Cody Argade each shot 3-under 69 in the second round to set or tie their best collegiate rounds. After turning in a 1-over 73 in Round 1, Whitton tied his best career round. Argade, playing as an individual, bounced back from a 5-over 77 in the first round to shoot his best collegiate round.

Whitton is tied for fourth with a 2-under 142 and Argade is tied for 16th with a 2-over 146. Juniors Owen Burt and Ben Harris are tied for 22nd at 4-over 148 and junior Connor Bruce is tied for 39th at 7-over 151.
