Mathers named to Ben Hogan Award watch list
FORT WORTH, Texas. – Huntingdon senior golfer Drew Mathers was named to the 2020 Ben Hogan Award watch list this week.
The Ben Hogan award is given annually and recognizes the top men's golfer from the NCAA (Division I, Division II or Division III), NAIA or NJCAA. The award takes into account all collegiate and amateur competitions during a 12-month period from June to May.
Mathers is one of 31 golfers named to the watch list and the only Division III golfer on the list. Of the 31 golfers, 28 are from the Division I level.
The Ben Hogan Award selection committee will select 10 semifinalists to be named on April 15. From that group, three finalists will be announced in May.
Entering the spring season, Mathers is the top-ranked golfer in Division III. He averaged 69.07 per round in the fall and shot par-or-better in 10 of his 14 rounds. He turned in seven rounds in the 60s, including four of the Hawks' top-six rounds of the NCAA era.
After setting the program's NCAA-era record for 72 holes as a junior, the senior twice tied the program's NCAA-era single-round record of 64 and set the program's NCAA-era records for 36 holes and 54 holes during the fall.
The Hawks' NCAA-era career leader in wins (six), Mathers won two of the Hawks' five tournaments in the fall. In his last 11 tournaments, dating to his junior season, he has finished in the top three in 10 tournaments (five wins, four second-places and one third-place finish).
