Mathers places third in Alabama State Amateur

OPELIKA, Ala. – Former Huntingdon golfer Drew Mathers shot a 3-under-par 69 on Saturday at Saugahatchee Country Club to place third in the Alabama State Amateur Championship.

Mathers finished with a 16-under 272 in the four-round tournament. The Mobile native, who shot 3-under 69 in Round 1, 6-under 66 in Round 2 and 4-under 68 in Round 3, was tied for fourth after the opening round, tied for the tournament lead after two rounds and was second entering the final round.

Birmingham's Gordon Sargent won the tournament with a 24-under 264. Sargent, who shot a 3-under 69 and a 6-under 66 in the first two rounds, closed the tournament with an 8-under 64 on Friday and a 7-under 65 in the final round.

Anniston's Jacob LeCroy was second with a 19-under 269. LeCroy opened the tournament with a 1-under 71 and a 2-under 70 before turning in the best round of the tournament with a 9-under 63 on Friday. He shot a 7-under 65 in the final round.
