Hawks open season with win over Tennessee Wesleyan

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon men's lacrosse team defeated Tennessee Wesleyan 14-8 in its season opener on Saturday in Samford Stadium.

Led by Miles Stading's four goals, the Hawks (1-0) had seven players score one or more goal and nine players register a point.

Stading scored the game's first goal with an assist from Karson Hastings in just under five minutes to start the first quarter. The Hawks were held scoreless until Kendrick Ballard gave Huntingdon a 2-0 advantage with 14 seconds left in the quarter.

Tennessee Wesleyan (0-1) scored to pull within one, but a three-goal run by Huntingdon gave the Hawks a 5-1 lead with 7:52 remaining in the half. The Bulldogs scored once more but Hastings recorded his second assist of the game when he found Brandon Scheele, to push the score to 6-2 before halftime.

Each team scored twice in the third quarter while Huntingdon took an 8-4 lead into the fourth.

The Bulldogs opened the fourth quarter with three goals in the first 5:16 to pull within two. With the score at 9-7, the Hawks took control of the game and outscored Tennessee Wesleyan 5-1 to take the win.

Sam Hitt picked up 14 ground balls while going 22-26 at the faceoff x. Senior Josh Clayton caused three turnovers.

Caleb Bohrer tallied four points with two goals and two assists. Mac Puller totaled three points with one goal and two assists while Scheele finished the game with three goals.

Ballard finished with two goals. Jackson Schrampfer and Austen Saucier each had one goal and Zach Barnhill added one assist.

Matt Murphy played 39 minutes in goal for the Hawks and recorded six saves while letting in three goals. 

As a team, Huntingdon picked up 46 ground balls to Tennessee Wesleyan's 18.

Huntingdon travels to Berry on Feb. 11 for a 2 p.m. matchup.
