Hawks Fall in Double Overtime to Alma

Montgomery, Alabama – The Hawks (2-3) fell in an overtime thriller to Alma College (2-2), 12-11.

The Hawks fell behind early after two Alma goals before Ian Bruggeman was able to score for the Hawks with 4:42 left in the first period (2-1). An Alma goal within the next minute boosted their lead back to two before heading to the second (3-1).

 

The next six minutes of the second period was all Scots as they added two more goals to take their largest lead of the night at four (5-1). Huntingdon finally stepped up after a goal from freshman, Gage Kettlewell who sparked a 3-1 run for the Hawks. Caden Bacz aided the run with back to back goals in a minute and a half to cut the lead to two heading to halftime (6-4).

 

In the first five minutes of the third, Kettlewell scored his second and third goal of the night, one coming after a fall and shot from the ground. The Hawks were motivated by Kettlewell's goal to tie the game and added another goal from Brady Moulton to take their first lead of the night with 10:03 remaining in the third. Hawks and Scots traded goals to close out the third with the Hawks up by one (8-7).

 

The fourth period was a rally after Alma scored the first goal to tie the game back at eight. Kettlewell and Bruggeman scored their 4th and 2nd goals of the night to take a two-point advantage with six minutes left (10-8). Huntingdon traded goals with the Scots but two late goals from Alma, the last one coming with eight seconds remaining in the game, took it to overtime (11-11).

 

In the first overtime, in sudden death fashion, goalie EJ Umphries continued to shine for the Hawks as he earned his 11th save of the night with one minute remaining to push the game to double overtime. With Huntingdon able to get a shot off with 2:28 remaining they just weren't able to find the net and Alma scored the final point to end the game at the 1:28 mark.
