Hawks Fall Short In Season Opener Against Oglethorpe

MONTGOMERY,Ala- In their first match of the season, Huntingdon men's lacrosse (0-1 overall), fell just short to the Stormy Petrels of Oglethorpe (1-1 overall) 10-8.

 

How it happened

 

First Quarter

  • Following a faceoff controlled by Tristan Dial, the Hawks came out the gates on offense aggressively, getting two shots at the goal on their opening possession. 

  • Oglethorpe, able to defend the two shots from the Hawks, quickly advanced the ball down the field to score their first goal of the game at the 13:42 mark

  • The Stormy Petrels forced another stop on the Hawks following possession, capitalizing with another goal, taking a 2-0 lead at the 9:35 mark

  • Sophomore Gage Kettlewell got the Hawks on the board for the first time this season with 8:22 to go in the quarter

  • With 6:35 remaining in the quarter, Oglethorpe was able to put in another shot, taking a 3-1 lead

  • With 3:43 to go, Colin Sloane ripped a shot down the middle, putting the Hawks behind 3-2 going into the second quarter

 

Second quarter

  • The beginning of the second quarter was highlighted by dominant defense from both teams, with neither team finding any groove on offense for the first 5 minutes

  • Oglethorpe found life at the 10:14 mark, scoring the first points of the quarter

  • At the 6:47 mark Oglethorpe was able to strike again, taking a 5-2 lead

  • To end the half, Gage Kettlewell scored his second goal of the game at the 2:08 mark to put the Hawks down 5-3 going into halftime

 

Third quarter

  • The Stormy Petrels came out of the half with a second wind, putting in a shot to take a 6-3 lead at the 13:19 mark

  • Battling back, Gage Kettlewell responded at the 10:54 mark with a goal assisted by Brady Moulton, bringing the score to 6-4

  • Remaining hot, Oglethorpe scored again at the 6:37 mark, extending their lead to 7-4

  • Both defenses held their own for the final 6 minutes, keeping the score at 7-4 entering the final quarter

 

Fourth quarter

  • Huntingdon struck first in the final period with Gage Kettlewell putting in his fourth goal of the game with 8:32 remaining

  • Brady Moulton followed the Hawks previous score with one of his own, putting the Hawks down 7-6 with 7:52 to go

  • Oglethorpe stopped the Hawks run with a goal of their own at the 6:40 mark

  • Continuing to fight, Tristan Dial put in a shot with 4:52 left in the game to put the Hawks back down 1, 8-7

  • Oglethorpe scored two goals in the final 3 minutes of the matchup, holding off the Hawks to take a 10-8 victory.

 

Key Notes

  • Oglethorpe successfully cleared the ball on 23 of their 24 attempts, while Huntingdon completed 17 of their 20 tries

  • The Hawks were able to secure 11 of the 21 total faceoffs, while the Stormy Petrels controlled the other 10
