Hawks Drop Offensive Shootout With Southern Virginia

BUENA VISTA, Va.- In search of their first USA South victory since their conference opener against Brevard, Huntingdon men's lacrosse hit the road to take on Southern Virginia University.

The Hawks jumped out to an early lead, but couldn't hang on to the lead, falling 18-11 to the Knights.

How it happened

As previously mentioned, Huntingdon got off to a hot start offensively to take a 4-0 lead by the three minute mark in the period. Freshman Jaxon Mcmonigle continued his offensive success this season with two early goals, which Kelcey Marston and Brennan Britten matched as the Hawks lead grew. Southern Virginia put a shot in at the 2:20 mark to momentarily stop the bleeding, but Mcmonigle's third goal of the quarter just 45 seconds later restored Huntingdon's four-goal lead at 5-1 nearing the final minute. The Knights put in two unanswered goals before the end of the period to bring the Hawks lead to 5-3 entering the second quarter.

Southern Virginia picked up where they left off at the end of the first quarter, scoring two goals in the first two minutes of the second quarter to even things at 5. Andrew Jbara's goal at the 8:26 mark put a pause to the offensive onslaught, but nonetheless the Knights scored again to tie things at 6 entering the halftime break.

Kelcey Marston got the second half started with his second goal of the game at the 12:50 mark to put Huntingdon ahead 7-6, but the rest of the third quarter was dictated by the offensive attack of Southern Virginia. A 7-0 Knight run through the rest of the period put the Hawks in a 13-7 hole as the fourth quarter got underway.

The Knights continued to pour it on in the fourth quarter, pushing their lead to 16-7 by the 11 minute mark. Marston scored for the third time on the afternoon to stop the bleeding, but another Southern Virginia goal with 5:24 remaining cemented the Knights lead, 17-8. Mcmonigle's fourth goal of the game at the 3:21 mark was matched by another Southern Virginia goal, bringing the score to 18-9 with one minute to go. Tristan Dial and Mcmonigle each scored to cut into the lead, but the Hawks ran out of time, dropping to the conference opponent 18-11.
