Hawks have to settle for 2OT tie with Covenant

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon men's soccer team had a lead late in Wednesday's USA South matchup against Covenant, but tied 2-2 in double overtime.

Brendon Van Emelen led the Hawks with seven shots, one shot on goal and one goal. Van Emelen was able to curve his corner kick into the goal for the game's first score.

Huntingdon (2-8-2, 1-4-2 USA South) took a 1-0 lead into halftime, but Covenant (3-8-2, 2-2-2 USA South) used a penalty kick to tie the game in the 54th minute.

Sophomore Jared Bodenbender headed the ball into the goal with an assist from Andres Quintero midway through the second half to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead. Bodenbender finished with one shot, one shot on goal and one goal.

The Hawks held off Covenant's attempts to score until the Scots were able to break free and scored the game tying goal in the 84th minute.

Both teams had chances in each overtime period, but neither team could capitalize on their opportunities.

Miguel Medina had five shots and three shots on goal. Bo Jenkins finished with three shots and two shots on goal. Killian Delmore and Zach den Besten had one shot on goal apiece. Quintero had one assist.

Dominique Thomas made his second start of the season in goal and finished with nine saves and two goals allowed.

Huntingdon travels to Maryville College on Saturday. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
