Lady Hawks earn fourth conference win in split with Covenant

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The Huntingdon softball team lost its first game on Saturday but won Game 2 to earn a split with Covenant College.

Huntingdon gave up nine unearned runs in a 10-3 loss in Game 1 before winning the second game 8-4.

Kelsie Dardon, Samara Miller and Jesse Dunn combined for 10 of Huntingdon's 17 hits and six RBIs in the two games. Dardon was 4-for-7 with two RBIs, Miller was 3-for-5 with two RBIs, a run and two stolen bases and Dunn was 3-for-7 with two RBIs.

In Game 2, Huntingdon (5-13, 4-2 USA South) scored four runs in the third inning and took a 7-1 lead in the fifth inning. A two-run single by Miller brought in Huntingdon's first two runs in the third inning before RBI singles by Raina Lanier and Dardon made it 4-1.

Dardon finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs in Game 2, Miller was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run and Dunn was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Amber Wade scored two runs and had one RBI, Lanier and Madison Hunt each had an RBI and a run and Brandi Blair, Lindsey Selph and Felicia Peoples each scored one run.

Hunt (2-0) pitched a complete game for the win. Lanier (2-7) took the loss in Game 1, despite allowing just one earned run in 4 2/3 innings.

Huntingdon took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning in Game 1. But Covenant (10-6, 4-2 USA South) scored eight unearned runs with two outs in the bottom of the fifth to put the game away.

MacKenzie Smelley had two RBIs and a run in the game. Dunn had one RBI and Blair and Lanier each scored one run.

Huntingdon plays at Maryville in a conference doubleheader on Sunday. Game 1 is set for noon (Central).
