Softball hands Maryville second conference loss of the season

MARYVILLE, Tenn. – The Huntingdon softball team earned a split with USA South West Division frontrunner Maryville on Friday.

After falling 9-0 in five innings in Game 1, Huntingdon bounced back with a 5-2 win in Game 2. The conference loss was just the second of the season for Maryville.

The Lady Hawks took advantage of a Maryville error, a two-run double by Paige Taylor and a two-run single by Alyssa Singleterry to take a 5-0 lead in the first two innings of Game 2.

In the top of the first, with two outs, Rayne Ellis scored on an error before Taylor's double drove in McKenzie Ridgway and Caitlyn Caffee. In the top of the second, Singleterry's single drove in Maggie Porter and Amari Fleming to make it 5-0.

Maryville answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the second and scored another run in the bottom of the sixth.

Winning pitcher Madison Hunt carried a one-hitter into the sixth inning. Hunt (8-4) finished with two strikeouts, no walks, allowed six hits and two earned runs in seven innings. Lindsey Selph (6-11) took the loss in Game 1.

Singleterry had two hits in Game 1 and was the only Lady Hawk with multiple hits in either game.

Coming Up: Huntingdon will play a conference doubleheader at Berea on Saturday. The first game is set for noon (Central).
