Lady Hawks hand Piedmont first conference loss of the season

DEMOREST, Ga. – The Huntingdon softball team split in a doubleheader with Piedmont College on Saturday.

Huntingdon's 5-1 win in Game 1 was the first conference loss for Piedmont this season. Huntingdon fell 6-5 in the second game.

Huntingdon (22-12, 7-3 USA South) put together 26 hits in the two games with Madison Perryman, McKenzie Ridgway and Annie Nolan combining for 12 hits, six runs and four RBIs. Perryman finished the doubleheader 4-for-6 with two RBIs, two runs, a double and a stolen base. Ridgway was 4-for-8 with two runs and an RBI and Nolan was 4-for-8 with two runs and an RBI.

In Game 1, Huntingdon scored five runs in the first two innings. Behind RBI singles by Nolan and Caitlyn Caffee, the Lady Hawks took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. In the second inning, Huntingdon made it a five-run game with RBI singles by Alyssa Singleterry and Ridgway and a sacrifice fly by Rayne Ellis.

Piedmont (23-6, 11-1 USA South) scored its only run in the third inning.

Nolan finished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run. Ridgway and Caffee were each 2-for-4 with an RBI and Kaci Cochran was 2-for-4. Ellis had an RBI and a run, Singleterry had one RBI and Perryman, Hannah Vines and Lydia Lewis each scored one run.

Winning pitcher Madison Hunt (13-3) pitched a complete game, striking out five, walking two and allowing five hits and one run in seven innings. Mallory McCarty (3-6) took the loss in Game 2.

In Game 2, Huntingdon fell behind 4-1 in the second inning. Huntingdon scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning to make it a one-run game, but Piedmont answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-3 lead.

The Lady Hawks scored one run in the fifth and one in the seventh, but could not overtake the Lions.                                       

Perryman was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run in the final game, Ridgway had two hits and two runs, Singleterry had two hits and an RBI and Nolan had two hits and a run. Cochran and Lewis each had one RBI and Claire Tomberlin scored one run.
