Hawks Sweep Piedmont on Senior Day

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Huntingdon (25-7 overall, 9-3 CCS) defeated the Lions of Piedmont (21-12 overall, 8-4 CCS) in their doubleheader on senior day.

Highlights:

Natalie Ritchey recorded her 100th Career hit.

Hawks Softball honored seniors, Crimson Wells, Katelyn Holcombe, Natalie Ritchey, Holly Sharp, and Emma Spurlin for their successes on and off the field as they get ready to graduate in May.

 

Game 1: Huntingdon 4 – Piedmont 0

Senior, Crimson Wells earned the start in the circle for the Hawks and managed the Lions offensively as she held them to no runs.

Huntingdon got to work early at the plate. In the bottom of the first, Natalie Ritchey singled to the shortstop and Brooke Stefankiewicz walked. Bailey Murphy singled to center field to send in Ritchey for the Hawks first run (1-0). Stefankiewicz scored off a failed pick off attempt and Jordan Holman's double past the firstbasemen brought in two more runs for Huntingdon (4-0).

Those were the only runs scored throughout the game. Holly Sharp relieved Wells after five innings to finish the game and continue to shutout the Lions.

Game 2: Huntingdon 10 – Piedmont 3

The Lions stepped out early on the Hawks with a 1-0 lead as Holly Sharp came to the circle. After closing out the top of the first inning it was the Hawks turn to respond.

A five-run inning secured the lead and momentum for Huntingdon. The five runs were sponsored by a Natalie Ritchey single to center field as she earned her 100th career hit. Brooke Stefankiewicz hit a single of her own to follow. Ritchey and Stefankiewicz both advanced on a wild pitch as Bailey Murphy headed to the plate. Murphy singled to bring in Ritchey and Stefankiewicz later scored off a failed pick of attempt. Holman brought Murphy across the plate and Holman later scored on a passed ball to cap off the first inning.

A one run single from the Lions brought Aubree Flanagan to the circle in the top of the third inning. The scoring would not pick back up until the top of the sixth when Piedmont cut the game to two runs with a one run single before the Hawks headed back to the plate (5-3).

Another big inning for Huntingdon came in the bottom of the sixth inning with 5 more runs. It began with singles from Dani Holt and Ritchey before Bailey Murphy doubled to send in Ritchey. Murphy's double was followed by another double from Holman to score Stefankiewicz who reached on a fielder's choice. The final two runs came from an Emma Spurlin single and Ellie Lorance was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in Maddie Grace Hubbard.

Kate Holcombe joined her team in the circle in the top of the seventh to close out the game as she allowed no hits with one strikeout.

The Hawks return to action at Lucinda Cannon Field tomorrow against Agnes Scott for a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 PM CT.
