Softball Goes To Extras Twice As They Sweep Mt. St. Joseph And Rhodes
MONTGOMERY, Ala.- #25 Huntingdon softball saw a dramatic close to the Firehouse Invitational, going into extra innings in both games of their double-header as they swept Rhodes and Mt. St. Joseph. The Hawks opened the day with a 2-1 win in 8 innings over the Lynx before finishing the day with an 8 inning, 3-2 victory over Mt. St. Joseph.
Game one v. Rhodes
After defeating Rhodes 16-0 in their second game of the day yesterday, the Hawks started much slower in their matchup with the Lynx today, leaving the first inning tied at 0. Katie Burch broke the ice in the bottom frame of the second inning, bringing home Taylor Au on a sacrifice fly to put Huntingdon ahead 1-0.
Held without a hit until this point, Rhodes started off the fourth inning hot, doubling at their first at-bat to put a runner into scoring position. A sacrifice fly just two at-bats later allowed the Lynx to even things at 1 before Allie Roberts retired the side with a strikeout. Through the rest of regulation, each side found runners on base, but couldn't convert the baserunners into scores, resulting in extra innings.
After forcing three outs without a recorded base hit in the top of the 8th innning, Miranda Treadway walked it off, doubling through the left side to score Lauren Watts and give Huntingdon the win, 2-1.
Allie Roberts pitched all 8 innings for Huntingdon, allowing three hits while pitching 7 strikeouts as she moved to 5-0 on the year.
Game two v. Mt.St.Joseph
Similar to the first game, neither side could turn any baserunners into scores, leaving the game deadlocked at 0 as the third inning got underway. The first run of the game belonged to the Hawks, with Miranda Treadway drilling a double through the left side to score Jordan Holman and put Huntingdon ahead 1-0. Riley Rudick returned the favor to Rudick at the following at-bat, hitting a double of her own to bring Miranda home and put the Hawks ahead 2-0.
The Lions put their first points on the board in the fourth inning, scoring a run on a RBI single to cut the Hawks lead to 2-1. With Huntingdon only recording 1 base hit in the fourth, fifth, and 6th innings, Mt.St. Joseph managed to score the tying run in the 7th inning to force extras.
Huntingdon held their ground in the extra innings, once again not allowing any base hits. To win the game, the Lions hit Dani Holt with a pitch, securing a run for Amaya Wommack, handing the Hawks the 3-2 win.
Freshman Addison Gaines pitched all 8 innings for Huntingdon as well, throwing six strikeouts to secure her third victory on the year.
