Huntingdon women’s basketball falls at Millsaps

JACKSON, Miss. – The Huntingdon women's basketball team overcame an early deficit, but couldn't complete the comeback in a 56-49 loss to Millsaps on Wednesday.

Huntingdon (3-4) fell behind by 11 points in the first seven minutes of the game and trailed by as many as 14 points in the first half. Millsaps (2-4) led 36-25 at the half.

Huntingdon began to rally after halftime and tied the game 35-35 early in the second half. The Lady Hawks took their first lead of the game on a Tanjanik Munford layup with 12 minutes left in the game. Huntingdon maintained a slim lead until the final four minutes and led 49-48 after a pair of Morgan Crawford free throws with 3:57 to play.

But Millsaps closed the game with an 8-0 run.

Raven Prater scored 12 points to lead Huntingdon. Patricia Pickens pulled down 13 rebounds and Munford had 10 rebounds.

"We didn't play the way we're capable of playing today," Huntingdon women's basketball coach Buzz Phillips said. "We rallied and took the lead late, but when you can only score two points in the final four minutes, you're not going to win many games.

"We have to regroup and get ready for our trip to Kentucky. We've got a tough trip ahead of us and we have to be ready to play better than we did today."

Huntingdon returns to action in the Pat Deacon Classic at Transylvania University on Monday and Tuesday. The Lady Hawks play Marietta at 7 p.m. on Monday and Muskingum at noon on Tuesday.
