GREENSBORO, N.C. – Huntingdon junior Pat Pickens scored a career-high 28 points on Saturday but the Lady Hawks fell to Greensboro 79-66 in the USA South Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
Pickens' 28 points tied Huntingdon's NCAA-era record for points in a game. Morgan Crawford set the record in the season opener last season at Mississippi College.
Huntingdon (5-2, 0-1 USA South) fell behind early in the game but rallied and matched Greensboro (5-2, 1-0) until the final minutes of the first half. With 4:58 left in the opening half, Huntingdon trailed 30-28.
But Greensboro took control with a 16-4 run to close the first half and took a 46-32 lead into the half. The Pride extended their lead to 20 points in the first three minutes of the second half.
From there, Greensboro controlled the tempo and closed out the game.
Behind Pickens' 28 points, freshman Mackenzie Garmany added nine points. Pickens and Tan Munford each had five rebounds.
Huntingdon returns to conference action on Sunday at Methodist at noon.
