Hawks Drop Home Opener to Asbury

Montgomery, Alabama – Huntingdon dropped its home opener game in Roland Arena to Asbury 74-62.

The Hawks held the lead for the first three minutes of the game with two quick layups. Asbury took the lead for most of the quarter until sophomore Cassidy Campbell knocked down a triple to shoot the Hawks up by 3. (14-11) To close out the first, Asbury went on a 7-0 run to bring the score to 18-14 heading into the second quarter where both teams went scoreless for the first minute. The Eagles would strike first with a layup to continue their run until the Hawks answered with their own 3 pointer. For the remainder of the first half, both teams traded buckets until the final seconds when Briana McGruder made a layup to tie the game at 27 heading into halftime.

First Half Stats:

Huntingdon went 3/11 from the 3-point line and 12/31 from the field while never getting to the free throw line. (AB Davis scored 7 points in the 1st quarter)

Asbury went 2/13 from 3 and 12/35 from the field while shooting 1/6 from the free throw line.

At the beginning of the second half, the Eagles came out hot going 3-3 from three-point territory. The Hawks continued to fight back as they soon tied the game again at 38 with 6 minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter. Asbury answered with an 11-0 run to create space in the scoring margin. With the score 49-38 and 3 minutes left in the third, the Hawks scored a few buckets of their own to bring the game within 7 heading into the fourth quarter. (54-47) Huntingdon was unable to hold on as they again brought the game within 6 points at 66-60 with 3:21 remaining in the game. A few fast break layups sealed the win for the Eagles and the final score was 74-62.

Second Half Stats:

Huntingdon went 2/10 from three and was led by sophomore Briana McGruder with 13 second half points.

Asbury went 50% from the 3 in the third quarter hitting 5/10 shots, and 7/16 for the whole second half. (35 points of their 47 in the second half came from behind the arc.)

The Hawks travel to Agnes Scott in Decatur, Georgia for their first conference game of the season on Saturday, December 3rd at 2:00 PM EST.
