Hawks Fall on the Road at Covenant

Lookout Mountain, Georgia – The Hawks (2-12 overall, 2-6 in the CCS) fell to Covenant College (5-10 overall, 2-3 in the CCS) 66-65.

Huntingdon struck first on the scoreboard with a made three-point basket from sophomore, Kinstin Davis. Soon after, Covenant scored a layup of their own but both teams struggled to put points on the board after that. Sparking back up with four minutes left in the first quarter, both teams began to trade baskets and the Scots took their first lead of the night at 6-5. Covenant's next basket was answered by a 4-0 run from Huntingdon to regain the lead at 9-8 with 1:35 remaining in the quarter. With less than a minute left, Covenant scored and the Hawks pushed the ball for AB Davis to add a layup of her own (12-11). A missed jumper by Covenant with 17 seconds in the quarter gave the Hawks the last possession of the game as AB Davis kicked it to leading scorer, Erica Rodriguez for a made three to close out the first and take the lead (14-12). The second quarter claimed no different with a close game still underway. Freshman, Erica Rodriguez went 3-4, scoring 9 points from three to boost the Hawks and give them the one point lead at halftime (25-24).

The Hawks made five first half threes, four of them coming from Rodriguez.

The Scots outrebounded the Hawks by 8.

The Hawks were unable to score from the free-throw line the entire half.

 

Covenant took back the lead at the nine-minute mark of the third quarter but two free-throws from Alina Shoemake on the next possession boosted the Hawks back up by one (27-26). Shoemake continued her six-point run for the Hawks to grow the lead by one (31-29). Two buckets by the Scots gave them the lead with five minutes left in the third quarter. Payton Corbett stepped up for Huntingdon and nailed a three to again change the lead (34-32). Covenant's layup to tie the game at the 3:30 minute mark sparked a 7-0 run for the Scots and gave them the lead for the remainder of the quarter. Kinstin Davis added four points for the Hawks in the last minute to bring the score to 41-38 heading into the final quarter. The Hawks quickly found themselves down by eight to start the fourth quarter, but an 11-0 run in 4 minutes by Huntingdon earned them the one-point lead (49-48). The Hawks and Scots went basket for basket for the next minute and half as the Scots took the lead with 2:47 left in the game. AB Davis answered with a three to give the Hawks back the advantage (58-57). Another Scots three and a pair of free-throws from Shoemake tied the game at 60 with 1:43 remaining. A Huntingdon foul brought the Scots to the free-throw line to sink two (62-60). With 43 seconds left Charity Shaw tied the game with a made layup assisted by Shoemake. The Hawks again fouled the Scots who made both free-throws and took the lead (64-62). With seven second left, AB Davis gave the Huntingdon their final points with a three, but time would run out as the Hawks looked to foul the Scots to gain one more possession.

The Scots scored 21 second chance points for the game.

The Hawks only scored three field goals in the third quarter, shooting 27%.
